DIY 5W SLO

I've been wanting to get into some of that stuff myself lately and I'm an absolute beginner. A friend that I work with let me borrow a book he has called "Electronic Projects For Musicians". It's definitely not bad if you're just looking for some info and a few easy starter projects. It starts right from square one if you know nothing about electronics, schematics etc and goes from there. I'm currently trying out a preamp project that's in the book. It's an older book, but I definitely feel as though it's given me a start.

Thanks for the info! I think I found a link to the book. Is the author Craig Anderton?

Yup that's the one! If you try any of the projects just do some research into parts first. Because of the age certain IC's are no longer available. Here's a link to a page that did some revised PCB layouts for the projects in the book which incorporate current IC's in place of ones that are nearly impossible to get.

I made my own PCB board but the book mentions a site that sells (and still does) ready to go kits for some of the projects. Just depends on how complicated you want to get. Good luck!

I have a fender champ with a soldano preamp - basically a 3 watt SLO. Built it back in 2001 or so.

however, I could never really crank it and the gain much at all because the power section wasn't really meant for a high gain preamp. There is a reason why amps with tons of preamp gain tend to have super clean/tight power sections.
