Do amps without Master Volume sound better?

Maybe. I think to get the crunch you want to have to turn it up, and volume is the best effect ever. So they sound better with all the air moving.

For what I like yes. Its just a different feel. I prefer nmv with an attenuator over a mastervolume amp. So its not all about just having volume for me.

if you could see the sound wave itself you would try to get what you want without an MV. thats why it sounds sso much bigger. Thats why some high gain amps, when playing with a band, never seem to cut through. yet a non master marshall just kills. bigger sound wave. check out ultimate tone volume 1 i think

So the best amp would not have any knobs then. Just wide open plexi all the time.

i actually prefer the feel of an nmv amp. it feels more "immediate" for lack of a better term.

yes. I've never heard dirty amps that sound better than 1959's and 1987's and I've never heard cleans that are better than NMV Fenders or Vox's. Plus even the cleans on the Marshall's and dirt on the Fender's and Voxes is stellar too.

I agree with Darren too about the attenuator thing. I'd rather heavily attenuate my 1959 than use a Master volume model. I would only choose a 2203/04 if doing Thrash or chuggy metal.

when i was learning how to play amps didn't have a master volume.. or a loop. everything went in front of the amp because there were no other options for the average player. now i find myself liking to crank a 6 or 12 watt nmv to the 9's.

NMV amps sound better. It's just that nobody will let you play that loud. Life is cruel that way.

This. And forget about getting into high gain with a NMV amp and any sane volume level, or any level where the soundguy won't yank you rught out of the PA mix.

Yes. They sound better for one show. After that, you're not able to tell anymore.

No. I'm a Plexi guy but......it depends on application. For heavy music my Triple Rec CRUSHES my JTM45.
For everything else? Yes, the 45 outclasses every MV amp I've ever played.

Well, my bandmate has a Wizard VC with MV and I got a NMV, both sounds great but the NMV Wizard VC sound more organic and huge.

"Better" is subjective. But they do have a certain magic to them that's hard to duplicate with an MV amp.
