Just curious. I shielded one last night and it seemed to help a bit.

I promote unprotected sex. I've been saving teenagers from having lame sex for as long as I can remember.

Oh man, there's nothing you can do to stop us around here these days.

Back on topic, yeah, I shielded my Ibanez's control cavity when I first got it and it needed some rewiring. Took care of a small bit of noise and radio interference thanks to poor wiring at my place.

It's so simple to do, I don't see why you shouldn't go for it

I do if there is no shielding in the first place. I have a P-Bass from the early 90's, MIM. Sounded fine, stock. Put a Duncan Quarter Pounder in it, and it hummed like crazy. I figured I must have just screwed up a solder joint. Went over it (and over it, and over it) and could not find where I screwed up. That's when I realized, there was no shielding of any kind. Copper taped the route and the back of the pickguard, hum went away. The Duncan was just that much more potent.

The shielding paint works great, and is easier to apply in a lot of ways. I used the copper tape because I'm an impatient bastard. :D

I think shielding paint is the way to go. I used copper tape from stew mac to shield 3 of my strats and ended up taking it out on all three. It eliminated some of the noise, but not that much, but it did make all my strats feel and sound dead. The classic line that I rarely listen to applies here, "Leave well enough alone."

Yes, I do. I use the copper tape stuff from Carvin. I did not have any noise issues. I just did it because I rewired everything.

I do on all my les pauls, rear cavity, I use to get static from my legs rubbing the back of the guitar, gone now,

Yes, and I also shield my cavity from guitarists.
Always keep at least 3 butt plugs in your cable drawer at practice/gigs.

Talked about butt plugs for about 3 hours tonight. But wtf are we talkin about? the metal conductor tape shit they put on my guitar yo promote ground and that crap? or are we rtalking about sheilding the enitre cavity from outside sources (radio and otherwise) becuaser that is mind blowing if the case.

Unshielded cavities can be considered very "high risk" behavior especially performing live.

I generally shield the cavity.

I haven't tried this yet, but in theory, this would make your guitar absolutely silent.

Bonding all of your shielding to ground is always necessary to get the full effect, whether it be the wire connecting the cavity shield to the pickguard/rear-route cover shield or tabs from the copper tape coming up over the edges to contact the pg/cover shield. It helps to reduce noise considerably, but it still won't be absolutely silent, especially if you are using very hot pickups. The coils are going to pick up some stray RF, and how much noise you get will depend on the environment.

Example of tab to connect plate and cavity shields.

whatever it is that brent gutierrez does to the cavities is perfect. it's that dull black shielding paint and a brass plate in all the cavities for grounding.

i wish all of my usa custom stuff was as quiet as the gutierrez. (yup, total fanboi)
