kinda harsh? i just put a new bridge on a mutt i'm working on. while i still have a bunch of tweaking to do i did plug it in and felt that the dimarzio in the bridge seemed to me to be a bit harsh sounding. is it just me.. or does anyone else notice the same thing?

Are you sure your piece of wood doesn't sound harsh?

With any pickup, it depends on the piece of wood itself.

They're no more harsh than any other brand.

50 pickup swaps won't make a harsh piece of wood sound pleasing.

50 pickup swaps won't make a dead-sounding piece of wood sound lively.

Different pickups will sound different depending on the guitar in which they are installed. If you think it sounds harsh, try something with a different eq curve and see if that makes the difference. As for Dimarzio's, the Tone Zone and Super III typically work well to tame a harsh sounding high end.

Edit: I see its a single coil. The SDS1 is far from harsh...it is actually very big sounding and strong in the mids. Methinks your guitar is "harsh".

thanks for the replies. i'll try rolling off some treble on the amp and see if that helps. i've got it dialed in for single coils right now. that could make a difference.

What value is your volume pot and in which position do you have this pickup? Specs of your guitar would help while you're at it.

messed around with the eq and that helped alot. rolled off some treble and presence.. and added some mids and lows. bingo. it's 500k pot and it's the bridge pup. thanks for the replies.

A 250K pot will help out as well.

The SDS-1 has a ceramic magnet, and they(ceramic magnets) always sound harsh and brittle to my ear.

i had just brought home my carvin x 60 head and marshall 1960 from a friend's rehearsal space. i was messing around on the 15 watt setting so i could crank it a bit and was dialing in some strat and tele tones. forgot to check the eq when i started wanking. oops! my bad.
once i re-eq'd the results were pleasing. sounded sort of marshally. i can live with that. ;)
now i've got to set the action and intonation on a kahler type roller trem.

It really depends on the pickup and the guitar IMO, however, overall the Dimarzio line is much less harsh to my ears and generally thicker, meatier, and warmer. Not all of their pickups....but most I would say.

I agree. Much warmer than Duncans as a whole........especially the Super Distortion, Breed, and PAF Pro.

once i dialed down some of the treble and presence and added some mids and lows it took the hashness out and added some body. however the kahler style roller bridge added a little extra bite i didn't have with the original fender style bridge. i was hoping that the new bridge would add some extra bite and sustain. it did. i'm pleased. it's tighter and brighter.. but still nice and thick with nice string definition. it's still a work in progress.. but that's half the fun.
when i dial in a strat or tele i like to add some treble and presence and cut the mids a bit to make it quack.
