Do EMGs ever go bad???

Okay so here's the deal..... my Eclipse sounds like ass no matter what I plug into. I've tried 5-6 amps and it always sounds the same. It has this compressed/buzzy/weak tone. I've had it checked out, and the solder connections are fine, the input is fine..... I just don't get what could be wrong with the guitar. I've tried new cables, batteries, strings and it's always the same. Anyone have any idea what could be going on here?

These are 81's by the way..
 
Yep. Did that. This is extremely frustrating because I have a show coming up and this is my only guitar that I use with the band. Every store I bring it to just kind of gives me the "Well, it IS an EMG 81. They sound compressed and buzzy"

You know, I was wondering that. It seemed like the tone knob for the bridge PUP was acting kind of different. How would I find out if it was a bad pot?
