So what would you guys recommend to tighten the low end up on an SLO? The SLO has those thicker lows and low mids than a more Marshall style amp.

I use a VFE focus to cut some lows in front of the amp, works great for me.

I watched the Pete Thorn demo of the Horizon Devices Precision Drive and damn was I impressed!

It works very well for not just metal styles, but for rock tones too. The 6-position rotary knob works wonders to tighten up your signal as much or as little as you desire.

TS9 clean boosting the front end>10 band mxr in the loop.

Yep. Boost thru front first... then add eq in loop if you need more.

EQ pedal, mids bumped. That cheap ass Danelectro Fish n Chips made me go from 'meh' to WOW! on the SLO. Loved it.

I've read a lot of guys dig those. Find a cheap/lesser expensive eq option.

Thanks for the info in reference to what to try with an SLO guys. I'll look at your suggestions and possibly the empress EQ as well. I had about decided to just try a tube screamer type pedal, but there are about 1000 variations on that theme fore Tube screamer types and I don't even know where to begin with that. The TS9 pro+ sounds interesting though. There are way too many freaking pedals out there these days!

Have you used a TS pedal before to boost ? Like you said there`s a lot out there. Some like/dislike the mid hump , the bass cut , the compression. Are you looking to just tighten the low end ?

Yeah, really just looking to tighten the low end. I don't really need the mid hump or much compression. Maybe a bit of bass cut that aids in tightening the low end. I have never actually used a tube screamer before. It is funny that I have quite a bit of experience with amps, rack gear, guitars, etc., but not much at all with pedals.

i use a od808 or khdk ghoul screamer for boosting my amps and tightening lows, adds some extra frequencies and sustain, i always liked the feel of my amps boosted.

For me it totally depends on the amp in question. If it's an old Marshall, I'll take the boost. If it's a more modern amp like a recto, I'll take the EQ in the loop.

Overall, in general I tend to think of boosts more as adding gain/chunk/saturation than adding tightness...but i guess it depends on your definition of the word. Maybe my definition of "chunk" is someone else's "tight." When I think "tighten" I think of removing frequencies that are making the sound too boomy, boxy, or thick, which is why I'd lean towards EQ in this case.

My default setting on my MXR is to scoop the hell out of the 31 Hz, slightly scoop the 500 Hz, and slightly boost the 1 Khz, and work from there. It usually seems to do the trick. Also, if you don't have an OD, you could just leave it flat and turn up the level so it acts as a boost, so of the two, I'd take an EQ. Again, context dependent, yada yada yada. Cheers!

I'm still a fan of the old cheap ass BOSS SD-1's. Those damn things sound good with any amp. :D

Out of the bunch that I've tried the Seymour Duncan 805 was perfect for that . It's got a full eq , I usually ran the mids pot around noon and that pedal added very little if any compression . I used it as a clean boost w/gain off and vol around 2 and it kinda just enhanced the tone and kept the low end tight . Even running the gain up to around 9 o'clock it was a really nice blend and didn't really color the tone

+1

The Focus pedal is very transparent, and its adjustable filters allow you to fine tune the low end response. Exceptionally well thought out design.

KHDK gs, only one I’ve used that tightens up without taking the ass end away. Plus the compensation eq is pretty cool.

Why not buy a Mesa Boogie JP2C? No pedal needed, tone chameleon IMO. Has the GEQ X2!
Yeah, nice plug.... :jerkit:

To be fair, he posted that comment back in April of 2017, probably had no intentions of selling almost 2 years ago.

I'm in love with the Savage Drive. It's made my others jealous. It has a Tight control too :)

Damn Man! do you put it in the input or the output?

I have 2 EQ pedals. I put one EQ pedal right before the input to the amp (so last pedal) and set the graph like a frown so it pushes the mids. I put the other EQ pedal as the first pedal in the effects loop and set that like a smile to give it the mean metal sound. Adjust bands to taste...

I still like the Timmy for tightening things up. The treble and bass controls make it perfect. I can’t stand the dreaded mid-bump of TS type pedals.
