Haha ah yeh the The Cult opening for Metallica, I remember Ian getting hit with a chair, with multiple chairs flying at the stage with people booing

I Would have never thought back then I would prefer to listen to The Cult these days

The Cult were good, nobody boo'ed here, but Queensryche got the worst beating i've ever seen, live OR video,i mean flat out mean, people threw cans, shoes, you name it,it was thrown.Even though i wasn't into them i felt bad.BUT! i never would have wanted the opening slot for Metallica when they were at they're musical peak of anger. It was like Bon Jovi opening for Slayer.

Saw them both times too, They treated Queensryche the same way when I saw them but no one in the band actually got hit by a chair..

Wow, I would have left after Queensryche. Rage for Order and Mindcrime are fantastic albums. Not into Metallica at all. I like bands with actual singers. But there is no denying they were huge. Couldn't play with any drummer back then without them turning every song into a Metallica song.

They were amazing back in those days. Regarding their Damaged Justice tour and Queensryche opening for them, here's what Metallica did:

"The last gig with Queensryche [support band] was pretty good. During one of their songs we hired about four male strippers, real gay looking guys, and they got up on our back amp line. Everyone could see them—the spotlights were right on them! But the band couldn't really see them, 'cause they were up so high behind them. These fags would be dancing on the amps the whole time! Queensryche didn't know what was going on."

Classy

than the mighty metallica (during the 80s?)

So says Guitar World March edition. I love all the early stuff. From the Black album on they got off track to me. I actually really like Death Magnetic though. It catches shit for being mixed too hot, which it is, but it sounds like a return to real Metallica to me. I do get tired of Hammett's relentless use of the wah and predicatable chromatic walks but I think he is a better player than he gets credit for. It's just that he's standing in the shadow of Hetfield who somehow manages to play incredible rhythm while singing.

Didn't like them then and I don't like them now...so, yead there were better.

Among the Living & Reign in Blood stand out as 2 albums that were right (& above?) Ride & MOP.
Mindcrime is there too, but not really metal in my book (too many pop sing alongs).

Plenty of better drummers & lead guitar players- as well as bass & Vox too- but not many had the complete package of 80s Metallica. I guess the rhythm guitar/songwriting/production puts them over the top back then....
