Does anyone on this forum own a real Jose modded Marshall?

I was just listening to a live Ozzy bootleg with Joe Holmes and then popped in Sykes with Thin Lizzy Live One Night Only and these two guys have two of the best hot rodded Marshall tones I have ever heard and they are both playing Jose modded Marshalls.

The only Jose modded Marshall I have ever played through was a '71 Super Lead that Mark Cameron and I were playing through and it was one of the best sounding amps I ever heard. Maybe THE best sounding amp I ever heard. It was not one of the higher gain Jose mods like Sykes and Joe Holmes but was ridiculously EVH sounding.

Anyway I was wondering who here has played one of the more extreme Jose mods and your impressions.

Thanks

I believe that Steve(Sah5150) Had 2 at one time but Im sure he will also tell you that Jose did many mods. Dave over at Racksytems said that the Main Jose mod was just a gain stage added infront of the normal plexi. He also mentioned that if the amp sounded great before the mod it would sound killer with the mod but if teh amp was lacking then the mod would be lacking. He pretty much summed up why some Jose mods sounded great and others did not.

I know that this was also the Case with the Lee Jackson mods. Ive heard 8 of his modded heads all in the row with the same mod and 6 of them sounded like ass and 2 sounded amazing.
I personally believe that some of the new amp modders out today can make any amp sound great which means they are taking the extra time to find out what makes things really tick.

Sorry for the rant but I hope this helps!

I also understand that Kenny Fisher's extra tube / gain mod was from Jose?
Im not sure but I guess it is possible

John Norum also still owns several Super Leads that Jose modded for him. He used them on Face the Truth and on the Don Dokken Up from the ashes cd!

Didn't Brian Jay from Keel have a killer Jose modded Marshall and when he got the Peavey deal they took it in and copied some of the design?

Did Jose use MIM parts?

I have a '72 - 100 watt Super Lead that's a higher gain Jose mod. It is glorious for that Joe Holmes tone.
I have a couple of Ozzy Live recordings and his tone is the tone that is closest to this amp for sure.
This is kinda funny... a few months back I asked about Joe Holmes on here and I don't remember hearing that he used Jose Modded Marshalls- I think I understood he used old Super Leads boosted or something.
BUT... Now it makes perfect sense. Yes, Joe Holmes has the "Jose" tone hands down!

ps. I think I might have this amp sold too.
Just bought a new house,

I have the circuit I am convinced is the Jose mod I had and Holmes has. I have the parts and will have the amp as soon as I finish building it. Mine will be footswitchable to a stock super lead circuit and will have a few more clever tweaks I've dreamed up. I knew Jose, owned two killer mods of his, so I know what the good ones sound like in person. Mine will be tweaked until it sounds like my old Jose mods did. And the good news is that you my friends may be able to own one of these someday soon...

Keith,
Dude.... everyone knows Joe used Jose Marshalls. If you check this thread linked below on Rig Talk started by some guy named Squarehead entitled "Joe Holmes", you'll see some guy named Squarehead introduced the idea that Joe used boosted Super Leads while all the rest of us tried to set that Squarehead guy right and mentioned Jose modded Marshalls about 30-40 times.

While we're on a Joe Holmes kick... anyone have any clips of him in action? He seems to have fallen off the face of the planet after the Ozzfest Tour a few years back.

Holy Crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!

I knew I had asked about his tone a while back but had forgotten. I must be getting old! His tone on the two Live Ozzy cd's I have is bang on Jose tone.

If anyone is interested in Joe Holmes (and his Jose mods) there was a thread about him on Huge Racks this week including a couple of links to a webpage where a guy named Taka posted a bunch of pics of him at Joe at Joes house with Joes gear. Unfortunately all the text is in Japanese. i tried putting the Japanese text into Yahoos Japanese to English translator and I swear, it makes more sense to me in Japanese. :D

Apparently according to some guys that know Joe, he has a new CD ready to hit the streets and they have said his tone is unbelievable on it and that they haven't heard playing like Joe is doing in 15 years or something.

If you want, I'll translate some specific parts. I won't translate all 3 of those links, though. Anything specific you're looking to know?

Code,
I appreciate the offer, but I really wouldn't know which part I wanted translated since it's ALL in Japanese.

I'll try to get a brief summary of everything for you in a few days. The stuff on "From LA: Joe's #2" with the Marshalls on it is actually pretty interesting. It talks about him going to Jose's shop, seeing Eddie drive up in a Lambo, and a few other interesting things.

Oh man, that would be killer. When you get a chance. Just post it in this thread because a few of us would love to read it.

Thanks!
