unplug from forums and youtube for a while and focus on improving your chops. (Now I just need to take my own advice...)

I did this for a while. On occasion stop in and see what's up. Went to a recent local guitar amp show and I was amazed by how many spent 2/3 of their time debating about what they use. I guess that would be the same for time online.

Depends on how diverse the player's sonic requirements among various genres (Rock, Jazz, Funk, R&B, Blues, Country, Classical etc...), and the environments (Live gigs, Studio gigs, Home- for fun, or home recording, etc.) they play those potentially various genres they may indulge in are-- as to the sort of range of gear they may want/prefer/require. That impacted my particular gear selection tendencies over the years.

Also, it depends on the available budget as to providing options which are something acceptable/within the budget, vs preferred.

As my tastes and appreciation for various genres of music, and styles of guitar playing grew, so too did the appreciation, and sometimes- requirements for the gear necessary-- to facilitate the various goal lines.

The moment you find that "Dear God this is my tone" sound, stop looking.

I think this is my biggest problem, as I don't have a sound. I haven't found it. I think it stems from not playing in a band. There's too much creative freedom, and not enough creative focus. I listen to a bunch of different types of music, and I love a lot of different types of guitar tones. As a result I have gear/tone ADD. What I'm attempting to do is just assemble a collection of versatile guitars, and not have guitars that overlap, ie. not have five 24 fret, 25.5", 2 high output hum guitars.

The guitars are the easy part though, the hard part is the amps. The amp I have is overkill, and yet I want two more. Something for blues, and something for 80's high gain Marshall sounds. I'm thinking about a Mesa Royal Atlatnic as I think it would be passable enough for me for both, but even then I'm adding a second 100w head to a bedroom haha. It's just crazy.

Maybe some high quality pedals will help me? I've had my eye on Kempers for awhile, but for all intents and purposes that's the equivalent of another 100w head.

Being a great player doesn't equal knowing squat about engineering/programming/routing gear. They are separate arts. As a result, those with higher expectations of themselves tend to become proficient in those areas, as well-- and make time, as a part of a larger goal than becoming proficient on the fretboard.

Just for some perspective on Over Kill'

I love OVER kill!!!

Zach you got the biggest rig I have ever seen!!
But about the gas....why should it end?
Like asking someone if they got too much money. ;)

Its never enough. That is what drives me. I love getting new stuff and playing the crap out of it.
So I can grab the next flave of the month and give that a test drive as well.

I equate it to asking if improving, or continuing to grow & learn ever ends, to a degree. I mean, I hope not. Like a mechanics tool box, over the years the amount and types of tools increased as time went by, and now when I need a particular tool, I have it available. I attribute that to getting old, and having chosen wisely, from the beginning, and not buying/selling, as much as buying for a purpose, and keeping.

My dealings with music, be it playing in "Madison Square Living room" with my tax return gear, or going to watch live music or cd purchases is strictly hobby oriented. Hobbies cost money throughout their existence. Kinda how I justify it to myself.

Yup...its a hobby for me. But damn if my current rig wouldnt bring it on tour across middletown USA! ;)
