I was thinking of that too, but then I`ve found other examples of 4101 combos (see the picture) and the transformers look as new as the ones of this amp. The Drake-stickers are hidden on the sides, but at least the mounting screws are looking the same.
Good... that's a beauty!

The bright cap is 1000pf on those and imo they need it to have clarity.

I don't; I tried that mod years ago (lifting 1 leg of the cap) and after trying it, immediately soldered it back. It's a small cap though, going off memory. Someone here or in the Tech sub forum could tell you.
Hey Racer, want to ask, ignorance and all, but does the bright cap just make the amp brighter?

As in roll off the treble or tone of the amp?
I tend to set amp up bright and adjust at guitar.

Sorry to derail...

I 'think' it's there to allow for more highs in your tone at low volume...and, when the amp is dimed it's supposed to be out of the circuit. But, in the 2203 I had and my current 72 Marshall, removing it darkened the tone a bunch, effectively 'neutering' the sound for my taste anyway. And, diming the amp did not restore the same tone vs with the cap present. So IME the statement 'diming the amp removes it from the circuit' is total BS, from what my ears told me.

Also, if you have a JCM 800 2205 or 2210, they have a treble bleed cap, that I clip which brightens the amp and becomes more aggressive as well. I think its C20 and it's a small cap in between the gain and lead ch vol, or lead ch vol and treble pots.

I kind of feel this way too. Probably psychoacoustics. I also feel like there’s still a difference. Although there theoretically should not be. With zero resistance through the pot when it’s maxed there’s no frequency to bypass.

I haven’t tried without it, but in the video demoes I’ve seen it seems like getting rid of the bright cap seems to really soften the attack and make the amp seem slower, so maybe that’s more the neutering effect than it just darkening the sound

I wanted to like the sound after clipping one end of the cap in my 72......you have a much easier volume taper, and the tone isn't bad...it's darker, warmer maybe...but I still lost that 'edginess' that was there with the cap in...and it wasn't there even when raising the volume. So I soldered it back.

Little update: I got the amp, my first 2204!
Amp is loud and crunchy. I expected more gain coming from Rectifiers, but I guess that’s why everyone is using a boost with this amps.

It has the original Drake transformers dating to December 81. ITT filtercaps, a 4700pf cap on the mids pot and a 1000pf bright cap, which is disconnected.
The combo has two g12-65 T3054 speakers and old preamp tubes with the I63 code written on it.

Are those possibly Mullards??? Two of them have the code written upside down. There’s more written on them, but difficult to read. Something like B0?2 or B7?4.

The replaced mid pot is a 220KB. 250KB would be the correct value here?

Yes those are vintage Mullard pre...not sure if the mid pot is 250..I'd solder that cap back, or if you want to hear it first grab a metal clip and try it that way.
Nice amp!

Thanks!
I will solder the cap back. The amp didn’t sound overly bright. Can‘t wait to hook up my sd1 and play it!
