What a shitty day. Wife wakes me up, lets me know that Gracie, our 8 year old cairn terrier (think toto from the wizard of Oz) is dying. I run downstairs and she's bundled up in a towel and twitching. Kristen got up this morning and Gracie was whining and laying down - couldn't get up. Kristen got her some water and then came and got me. Dog had a clean bill of health at her last vet visit 3 months ago. I also did a quick recon to see if she got into anything that could have harmed her - nothing.

By the time I was able to get dressed and find an emergency clinic to take her to, she was gone. What really made it bad is that this was the pet I got my wife when we were engaged... so basically Gracie was our kid. A funny little dog that wasn't afraid of anything - and always on patrol. No enemy squirrels or ducks made it undetected past our place - she would track them from inside and make sure they weren't doing anything to harm us. I could tell her 'bath' and she would run upstairs, wait in the tub, after I washed her she'd wait until I put a towel on the floor, THEN jump on the towel, let me dry her and grumble a bit, but cooperate fully. What a great dog she was.

For bonus points my shoulder has been jacked up for a little over two months and I have another appointment with a specialist this afternoon. Well, wife and I took Gracie to my dad's place out in the country and it took awhile because the ground was still cold and hard, but I made sure she was put to rest out there. My shoulder feels like it's about to fall off, but I had to do it.

I know you can take an animal that dies to a vet or clinic and pay a disposal fee.. and in some localities it's the law - but I wasn't going to give her up to strangers.

Sorry to hear about your dog. It sounds like he was happy and you guys gave him a good life and proper burial.

I've got a dog that's pretty old now, about 15 years. He's deaf, mostly blind and moves about slowly. When I get up in the morning the first thing I do is reach down a pet him to make sure I get a response. He always gets up and follows me to the backdoor so that I can let him go out. I dread the day, soon I fear, when I reach down and he remains still. :aww:

Man that sucks. It's unreal how much pets become a part of the family. My heart goes out to you guys.

~R~

Sorry to hear of your loss Pete. It sucks losing pets. Dogs are awesome.

We had to put our lab to sleep this Sunday, sucked.

Sorry to hear that Pete, pets are family members too and losing them hurts just as bad imho...

I'm sorry this happened to you my friend, I just re read what you wrote twice and am just very saddened, my Dog Cleo passed away in nov of last year and a similar thing happened, and it just breaks my heart, I'm a big tough angry guy and this stuff just puts me in tears for some reason, I now have a a very similar small dog who does the same things yours did with the animals outside, and it just made me think of spanky and when I get home I'm gunna really take care of her!

sorry for your loss man, but Gracie is in dog heaven now and having a good time!

:(
