What a shitty day. Wife wakes me up, lets me know that Gracie, our 8 year old cairn terrier (think toto from the wizard of Oz) is dying. I run downstairs and she's bundled up in a towel and twitching. Kristen got up this morning and Gracie was whining and laying down - couldn't get up. Kristen got her some water and then came and got me. Dog had a clean bill of health at her last vet visit 3 months ago. I also did a quick recon to see if she got into anything that could have harmed her - nothing.
By the time I was able to get dressed and find an emergency clinic to take her to, she was gone. What really made it bad is that this was the pet I got my wife when we were engaged... so basically Gracie was our kid. A funny little dog that wasn't afraid of anything - and always on patrol. No enemy squirrels or ducks made it undetected past our place - she would track them from inside and make sure they weren't doing anything to harm us. I could tell her 'bath' and she would run upstairs, wait in the tub, after I washed her she'd wait until I put a towel on the floor, THEN jump on the towel, let me dry her and grumble a bit, but cooperate fully. What a great dog she was.
For bonus points my shoulder has been jacked up for a little over two months and I have another appointment with a specialist this afternoon. Well, wife and I took Gracie to my dad's place out in the country and it took awhile because the ground was still cold and hard, but I made sure she was put to rest out there. My shoulder feels like it's about to fall off, but I had to do it.
I know you can take an animal that dies to a vet or clinic and pay a disposal fee.. and in some localities it's the law - but I wasn't going to give her up to strangers.
