I find this to be one of the most fascinating solos I ever heard.
Do you hear any effects on the guitar?
At first I though it was pretty bare but then one day I threw some flange on my guitar and it started sounding similar.
Also, if you watch the live version he's using a slide (What kind is that? It's hard to see.), then I wondered if that slide is also used on the studio version, for the solo specifically.

i love this tune. One of my all time fav DP songs. I was thinking of doing a cover but haven't got around to it.
As for the solo, I don't know, it's really off the cuff. Blackmore never played it the same twice live, always improvised. So take it for what its worth.

Certain off the cuffs solos are really hard to duplicate anyways cause it's so raw and of the moment, not structured or written, more "out there" yet still works. The tone is very metallic, very electric. Maybe it's a cocked wah (not that there's anything wrong with that ;) ) with some flange.

Saw them in '85 on the Perfect Strangers tour. Still to this day the loudest, clearest, and best live guitar tone I have ever heard. Loved the tone on the PS album. I know he had some double rail pickups in his guitar at that time in the studio and live. Barden's maybe? Not sure what effects he used in the studio, but I do hear some flanging/phase shifter type tones on different tracks on the album.

First, he always used a treble booster. I don't hear any effects on the studio version although they could have lightly flanged the guitar. The solo in the studio is NOT slide.

The live one has a slide solo. He doesn't put it on his finger, rather he sort of palms it.

^^^I agree there's no slide in the studio. But when comparing the 2 versions, the slide seemed to add a distinctiveness that resembles the studio version, so I thought maybe he had the slide cuffed and used it for a note or 2 but that's probably just that metallic tone with string bending/twang that can give a slide sound to it.

Necro-bump.

I was just thinking of this lately, it sounds to me like there is a touch of flange on the guitar as well; maybe through-zero? I'm not sure if Blackmore ever doubled his tracks, maybe the flange was added in the studio for space; could be just for character. It sounds to me like the flange may have been adjusted throughout the track's duration.

As far as I know, at this time Blackmore was using Schecter F500 pickups; they have a large quarter-pounder size magnet, but vintage wind. Also, if you pay attention to Blackmore's guitar live around this era, his pickups are set really low, into the body almost. Then of course his treble booster, and modded Marshall Major being very loud form the sound. In an old interview Blackmore mentioned he doesn't have any bass on the amp's EQ, and that his tone is lots of mids. There used to be a site by Blackmore's guitar tech John "Dawk" Stillwell; had a lot of info on his amp mods and etcetera.

I'd be interested to have some more knowledgeable Blackmore fans contribute here.

most of it is in Blackmore's touch and feel, you may want to try using a Vox and Hornby Skewes Treble Booster. He used that on Machine Head and probably countless other albums.

Me too, my second ever concert. Loud is an understatement!

This.. sounds just like that screechy high end you get from a treble booster. Used with single coils (though here I think his were a beefy single coil), there is your tone. I also hear an amp pushed to the max and a speaker pushed to the max which gives the natural compression or squish. I love Blackmore but sometimes his off the cuff playing style worked against him and sounded like a sloppy mess. Love his studio playing though.

Ok, revisiting this thread as i was listening to some older Rainbow stuff on youtube.. it honestly sounds like he has some FUZZ and octaver/harmonizer going on here. Sounds doubled slightly and hence the fuzz/octaver thing comes to mind. All to say, it sounds messy but very cool at the same time!
