Not everyone will like what the JB does. To say that it sucks or doesn't have "tone" is just silly. A more honest description would be to say that you don't like the JB tone. The JB has been used for some of the most memorable tones in rock and metal. I really like them, but am not currently using one. That being said, I have three of them sitting in my office for whenever I may desire that tone again. The Aldrich is a killer pickup as well.
The JB has been around so long and with so many pickups that have come out over the years, it is easy to dismiss it as just a "stock" pickup. It has been and is used in a ton of guitars. They sound great in the Charvels and LTDs they come in, that's for sure. They work great in those.
With that said, I thought I had a JB in a Randy Rhoads "V" I had years ago and hated it. It was like "death by mids". I didn't have that guitar a week.
I wouldn't say the Aldrich is completely different from the JB. Yes, it's smoother, fatter, and hotter, but I think it has a lot more in common with the JB than it does with, say, a PAF-type.
