So yesterday I got off of work early and had some play money on hand. I decided that I would give the new Seymour Duncan P-Rails a try to see if they might stop my jonesing for a P90 equipped guitar. And maybe if I got lucky, they would sound good in full on humbucker mode. Well, I have to say that this pickup has far exceeded my expectations. In fact, I don’t want to put the guitar down now- it’s just that fun to play.

In series humbucker mode you get this huge tone that has singing highs and tight percussive lows. There is really something special happening in the mid-range frequencies. It’s hard to describe, but you can hear every note clearly and everyone of them is warm and full sounding. I think I have just found my new favorite humbucker, and one will be replacing the Suhr DSH+ in my ESP soon.

P90 mode has been the true surprise of this pickup. It is fat and it growls and spits just like a true P90 should. It may be a tad bit more aggressive that the Duncans that were in my Godin LG- but damn, these do sound good. In fact I find myself switching back to the P90 mode a lot! There’s just something cool about this tone. It’s almost EVHish in its bite and brownness. Whatever it is… I like it!

I don’t currently have this guitar setup to allow me access to the single-coil rail side of the pickup, so I can’t comment on this portion of the pup. After I get the neck version, I’ll go all out and to the double push/pull wiring for it. I just have it set with a spin-a-split off the neck tone pot. (which I never use anyway.)

If you’re looking for something different but totally cool, then I recommend that you check out the P-Rails. I will definitely be putting these in all of my guitars within the next few months… to me, they’re that good!

Here's a couple of pics after the install:

Good stuff.

Got a set of p-rails to be installed in a yamaha tele-style guit in the near future.

Lookin' at splitting the bridge from hum to p90 & the neck from p90 to single.
