Looking for some hot (but not too hot) h-buckers. Anyone have experience with either of these?

Rob

The Demon is not hot at all. Its like a 59 with a little more chunk. The name is misleading.

Those 2 pickups should be pretty different.
What kind of sound are you looking for? What guitar is it going in? Floyd? Hard tail?

Tone i'm after is warm-full-punchy-percussive. Not wanting anything too trebly or shrill.

PAF-ish?
What kind of bridge? Guitar wood?

Needs to be a little hotter than a PAF and not too mid heavey, but yes- in that direction. Guitar is alder body/ maple neck w/ rosewood f-board. Bridge is a wilkinson trem.

I hear good things
https://www.seymourduncan.com/products/e ... _parallel/

also I heard the Dimarzio 36th anniversary is a good pickup.

I bought a screamin demon and was disappointed with it. It sounds pretty good and has good clarity and doesn't seem to have any of the spiky high end that my JB's have, but the output is quite low and it feels like I'm fighting to pull out my usual runs and such out of my guitar. I guess I was expecting more power out of it because of the name.

I remember reading a lynch article shortly after I bought the demon where he said at the time that pup was produced he was really into lower output pups because he wanted to get all the gain and power from the amp, not from a hot pup pushing an amp. Just a FYI. ;)

Both are lower output in feel. I actually really like the Screamin Demon. I've owned both at the same time and still have the demon. Its like an over-wound PAF with some grind to it. It hold up well under high gain. The breed was nice for soloing, but I felt it was very muddy for rhythm work. The Demon also cleans up better.

I have a Screamin Demon in my ESP purple tiger. It is weak and like mentioned, it seems like you are fighting for sustain. I am a little hesitant to change the pickup because it being a sig model, but i think I will change it. I am just not a fan of Seymour Duncans.

Most people I talk to about them really hate the Screamin' Demon. I really dig 'em lots. I think
most don't like them cause you really have to
play them to get the most out of them. They aren't
high output at all and they do require you to play
the guitar to get the most out of them. They are
a rewarding pickup I think though.

I like the tone the Demon produces...works well in that guitar and the GL600MT... but it definitely requires a lot of work to play...and/or a tubescreamer :D

I wouldn't go for a Breed...always seemed very mid heavy to me..and it's pretty thick sounding

I usually play with my gain on 6. So I am use to working it out. I have a PAF in a LP copy and it is thicker and more ballsy. Funny word  I due love the sound of the single in the purple tiger.

There's been a lot of discussion about the Screamin Demon over at the Duncan Forum.

A lot of people see the 10K ouput, and automatically assume "overwound PAF". But the Demon is wound with thinner 43 gauge wire, not vintage 42 gauge. So the tone is a lot thinner than a comparable 10K overwound PAF.

The Screamin' Demon is more akin to an overwound Duncan Jazz Bridge pickup.

I could see how the Demon would work GREAT with a very saturated preamp section, which is how Lynch used it back in the day (according to the previous post). The tone and specs make sense for that.

If you want to stick with the Seymour Duncans, I'd check out the custom shop Brobucker.

10K. 42AWG vintage wire. Scatterwound. Aged A5 magnet. Overwound PAF with warmth from the aged magnet, and clarity from the scatterwind.

I wouldn't use the demon in the bridge for high gain. I use a demon in the neck.

The Breed is very thick sounding.....it's a great pickup IMO

thick, compressed, overabundant bass, one of the worst pickups I ever tried. YMMV IMO.

I had one in an Ernie Ball Axis, and it sounded good in that guitar (it was thin sounding before I installed the Breed)....so I can see how someone could say it's too thick for certain guitars. I did wind up swapping it out for an Air Zone, which I liked more.

"Demon vs Breed" is like "salad vs cheesecake"

sounds like you want a burger.

try a Suhr Aldrich.

(fwiw, I love the Breed, and HATE the Semen Demon)
