e609 vs. SM57

It doesn't matter what I'm hearing in the room or how I EQ my amp...........everytime I record using the e609, it ends up full of low mids and lacking in the high mids. I almost always have to go in (post recording) and add some high mids to get it to sound right. The e609 also seems a bit fizzy sounding.

I don't remember this being the case back when I used an SM57. Are these things "inherent" when using the e609.....are am I doing something else wrong?

I'm thinking of picking up a SM57 but I wanted to hear what you guys think first.

I find just the opposite. The 609 being brighter and clearer and the 57 being darker. Hmmm..

Yeah, they complement eachother very nicely. I really like the Sennheiser MD421 the most, but you pay $$$ for it.

This was my exact perception of this mic. I think the e609 shines as an add-on mic, but not as a sole microphone. It plays well with a SM57.

The tracks "Grounded" and "Home at Night" were recorded with a 50/50 mix of the 57 and e609.

I think the 57 is a safer bet, its just easy to get a very usable sound from it. I have had good and bad luck with the 609's 906's. Most of it probally me just not taking the time to play with placement. I still think a heil PR30 is a better mic for guitar cab.

I think the e609 is a great cabinet mic in comparison to the SM57. The 57 gives a nice growl but overall, the tone is different (even though its still a good sound). With the e609, when I mic a G12H30, a V30, or Celestion 80, I always have to place the mic in different spots to get the sound for that individual speaker. I'm sure that's a common occurence with mics in general, but that might be the main solution for most folks complaining about the e609.

For example, when micing the G12H30 w/ an e609, it sounds like MY amp. A freaking fantastic sound that I simply can't complain about. Even in my in-ears it sounds great. With micing a V30, its usually leaning towards some harshness (unless I find a sweet spot). With the Celestion 80, I usually have to dial out some highs cause its so bright. On the other hand, an SM57 works fine w/ the V30 and CL-80, but it colors the tone A LOT of the time. I dunno?

I mic my Diezel cab w/ my e609 at the very corner of the top of the cab and it sounds fantastic. And, like mentioned...it pairs well w/ an SM57 but I would be TOTALLY fine w/ just using the e609.

I will say this. The BEST experience I've had when micing my cab is when the sound guy at a gig suggested using a Beta SM57 and an SM81 (pencil condensor). They were patterned together near the same spot with the SM81 at a slight angle. I was blown away by the tone to say the least. Once again the mics were at the very top of the cab, which seems to always give a great tone. I would LOVE to try an e609 with the SM81 sometime though...I have a feeling that it would sound wicked.

About £250-300 gbp i think... which would be almost $400.

I always found the e609 to be fizzy. I could never get it to work with anything including a 57. Just last week, I read RockStarNick's mic shootout thread and was very impressed by the e906. RockStarNick also pointed me in the direction of a link comparing the e609 and e906...huge difference. After listening, I picked up an e906 this past weekend and gave it a whirl. The e906 works way better FOR ME. So much so, I've decided to get another one. Really cool mic.

421 is a GREAT guitar cab mic. Very detailed with highs and lows, bigger picture then just a 57.

To the OP, I know what you mean. I can't seem to get a great sound from the 609. Last time I recorded, I used tons of mics. I ended up only using the tracks with the 57.
