I don't mind PP so much. A 3% charge to transfer money to me is not that big of a hit. My finances don't revolve around 3%. But, 10% for eBay is a totally different story. The actually don't do shit but provide a parking place for your item. PP holding your funds is not right though for the seller.

Steve, Forget the monetary aspect. Using PP the seller has zero protection. If this guy who just bought yer guitar doesnt like the gauge strings you have on it, he can file a dispute and its over. I sold a neck and the buyer {after a week} says it was damaged. I had a ton of pics from every angle and sent them all to PP. I figured it was a no brainer. PP finds in favor of this guy and i'm out $$$. The ass kicker was that he emailed me after the whole mess to tell me he just wanted to copy it and didnt have any intention of keeping it cause he didnt have the money....

Did you get your neck back? These credit card reversals are what scare me most. I would hunt someone down and fuck the remainder of their life up if it was over something of value.

Got it back, but on my dime, AND Paypal fees not returned, after I was assured there was enough pics and evidence on my end that "Clearly there is no damage to the neck". I pulled my $$ before PP could take anything and havent used them since. They can suck on it for their fees. They were persistent in trying to get their money for quite a while but eventually went away.

I may be flamed, but if you are surprised by the fees eBay charges, its your fault for not reading the terms. 10% is not a huge amount (although $600 is still $600 and I get that). Dont like it? Dont use it.

I didn't get the memo that said terms changed and fees went to 10% plus and don't think hunting for the fees on their site is openly advertising rates.

yes, exactly. would be very simple to do. they go through the trouble to show what listing fees are when you list. they could remind you what the total will be when you sell and also inform you on the same screen that you won't get your money for 2 weeks. you have to hunt for that too. it's all in the scam advertising. i guess they have had to make up for all the losses by jacking rates up.

As soon as the new fee hike kicked in I stopped selling on ebay... Maybe I will buy when I need something but my selling days are over. There is a site called reverb.com that offers ebays old sellers fees to sell in an auction like platform.. unfortunately, it does not yet have the visibility

The fees are outrageous; where have you been This topic has come up before and I have a strategy for "beating the house". I'll usually list something with a relatively low starting bid and wait for the offers to roll in. Sometimes it's someone who seems genuinely interested sending me a question and I will imply that I'm open to taking offers outside of ebay to save us both some bucks. Other times, people just make offers and I negotiate from there. I will only accept Paypal so I don't feel too bad about ending auctions early but I've been screwed too many times on those fees...

When they hiked the max final value charge to $250, I said that's it. No more selling things over $500 or $600 on eBay. At a $100 max it a actually made dollars and sense. Now, forget about it!

Nowadays one of the primary considerations I think about when buying a piece of gear is how easy it will be to sell. If the item is not likely to be a fast sell on the forums, you have to think about dealing with the larger market of ebay and padding the price and dealing with the ebay-acracy.

Selling gear has a higher potential cost/liability factor now, it's slowed me down personally.

Very few people are buying anything. High value, small company luthier built guitars seem to be on the uptrend. Not here, but on The Goober Page. Of course, everyone wants to be a luthier now. Fucking Jed Clampett can whittle a guitar out of a tree trunk and slap a bolt on neck on it and call himself a luthier if he uses BKP's.

Tax time maybe? I've noticed forums are flooded with awesome gear at ridiculous pricing. Also noticed some over-the-top deals to be had on eBay, but that's eBay, and eBay is evil. So fuck that. But wow - some vintage gear at 10% its otherwise usual value; guitars, amps, etc. Also noticed a proliferation of high end jewelry out there too - people are pawning their wares man. Money's tight, and that ain't funny (Kinks, "Low Budget", 1979.)
