I've owned about five EBMM Axises and five EVHs. My understanding is that the Axis has the identical, proprietary DiMarzios (zebra pattern) that came in the EVH models. Long ago a buddy's EVH's bridge pickup died and EBMM wouldn't let him buy a new one until he sent them his dead one. I bought an Axis a few years ago that had an Air Norton in the neck and Tone Zone in the bridge, both all black. I'm sure they weren't original to the guitar. Now I'm watching one on eBay that also has all black DiMarzios and the seller is claiming they're original. Anyone here know for sure that they only came with zebra pattern, proprietary DiMarzios in 2003?

Yes, the Axis only comes with zebra DiMarzios. If it has a Tones Zone and an Air Norton, then the pickups were changed. The Axis pickups sell for serious coin on eBay.

Some of the Axis Sports from the late 90’s/early 2000’s could’ve had all black DiMarzios. But if it’s a standard Axis with the maple top/binding/Floyd Rose, then they would’ve been zebra.

FWIW, you could probably try and find a used Sterling AX40 and rob the pickups from it if you're desperate. I have two of them, and one came from the factory with the Axis pickups. The other is an older model that has the generic pickups that I later swapped in favor of Peavey Wolfgang pickups. I much prefer the Wolfie pups in those guitars than the Axis ones. Not sure how to truly identify what AX40s have the Axis pickups aside from pulling them and looking under the plate. Sterling had the Axis pickups option for only a few years, and now have completely discontinued the AX40 in favor of their new Axis - which seems to be more of the Axis Sport.

Example of the Axis pickups in the AX40:

Oh, I don't care or have any plans for other pups. I just wanted to verify this was not stock, because the price is way out of line, probably for even an all original one. I saw a pair of original Axis or EBMM EVH pups on Facebook about three years ago and I think they went for $300. They're probably more now.
