Ecstasy problem

Hey guys,

I'm having a problem with my Ecstasy: if the 1/2 power is engaged I have no sound on the amp BUT I still have the preamp working (I connect the send's amp to another gear and it sounds right), and if I engage the full power I have the sound back BUT I get a red light on the FUSE 2 (I guess it's telling me the V9 and V10 are not working, right?) and also a weird low frequency hum.

Anyways, V9 and V10 are power tubes?

Be carefull. It sounds like your tube or tubes is redplating. There is a unique hum when a tube redplates. You can damage your amp if you keep messing with it. Get it retubed asap. When one tube redplates, usually more go.

Are you running it in class A or A/B?

There is a resistor change that needed to be done on some of the XTC amps because of red plating in class A. Simple fix if that's what you have going on.

I'll put new tubes. It's probably better change all of them. Sorry for the stupid question but does the XTC have fixed bias, I mean: can I put a new set of power tubes without worring about it?

No you have to rebias.That might be your problem to beigin with. Tubes biased to high.

Thanks again. I have no idea how to do it. Gotta take the amp to someone to do it for me. Tubes biased to high is what I have to do, right?

Just gonna chime in here... Seems to me you may not be entirely well versed in the mechanics and maintenance of a tube powered amp. This is fine, we ALL have to start somewhere. But the bottom line is, don't muck around in there - get a technician to look into it and get one who's reputable. One thing that struck me is that, depending on the configuration changes you'd made to your amp - 1/2 power, ClassA-A/B, etc, you also have to change the impedance setting on the outputs. If not, you risk running too high into to low a load.

I'm not saying I know exactly what's happening, but I do know you ought to make sure you keep that amp healthy and perfect in all ways possible
