On the internet everyone is a warrior. I think I have personally met 500 of the 250 Seals that were deployed in Vietnam. I train with a bunch of active duty and retired military and LEO guys. In my life I have personally met 4 actual spec ops guys and only two of them are guys I have taken courses from or trained with. The other two were older Nam era vets who didn't like talking about it at all. My friend's brother Max wouldn't even admit to the VA doctor that he was ever "In Country". In fact he was Raider Recon doing search and destroy missions in Cambodia and Laos. In all the years I've known Max he has never told me or his brother any "Nam stories". Another friend of mine's mom used to date a guy named Ray who was a Green Beret. In all the years I've known him only once has he told any stories and he was drunk on his ass. The only time I ever saw him drunk. He did used to tell us what dog and parrot tasted like and shit like that. Those are the guys you know are telling the truth. The ones that won't hardly talk about it.

Context… had a guy try to talk a little smack to my son last night. When I got there he got up off the porch and went in the house. My boy handled it like a champ but I don’t play that shit.

This reminds me of a couple sayings I really like. We used them from time to time when beating the shit out of each other in class: "It's better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war". Also, "you can't truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless".

Edit : Film is Once Were Warriors, not the erroneously titled "Once We Were Warriors", above.

I always really enjoyed this movie…. Loved ole Jake…tragic story though….
It really is...I've been telling my wife about this movie and might just have to break down and buy it on dvd - been about thirty years since I've seen it. Really great film and it really is a sad story.

Dude I just happened to be up late one night and it came on HBO or something. I was literally enthralled watching it. Then I went forever not remembering the name until I happened to see it in a blockbuster or something…
