Anyone tried the little EH 44 Magnum Poweramp?

Looks like a perfect idea for using a portable W/D rig. Having a poweramp in an MXR pedal sized chassis is just awesome. The only concern for me is.. How loud is it? Loud enough to power the Wet side of a W/D rig in a Live/Band setting?

I have one. For awhile I was playing around with pedalboard rigs based around the 44 Magnum amplifying into a 2x12, using various distortion and AMT pedals for the "preamps". It's such a cool pedal to have around. Of course, it doesn't sound like a real tube amplifier, but it's got some mojo and is more than loud enough to practice with a full band. It's been sitting around gathering dust though. It's handy but the novelty wore off, and I mostly play guitar sitting in front of a computer lately.

There's a cool video of some forumites using an EQ pedal and a Radial Hot British (or maybe the London?) and getting a killer modded Marshall sound.

I thought about getting one after seeing this video. Seems like it would be perfect for a W/D rig also.

^ That's the video I was talking about right there.

I'm thinking that it will have heatsinks mounted inside to keep everything reasonably low heat..

That's a good idea. I have gotten a pretty decent tone out of a AMT P1 before. I imagine with a P1, .44, EQ, and 1x12, you could have a killer portable rig.

I've never noticed it getting warm enough to give it a second thought. If anybody is looking for one, I'll ship/PP for 80 bucks Con USA. It's not really doing anything for me anymore, and I'm going the whole modeling/monitor thing now.

Coolest pedal-based 44 Mag combo I used was AMT S1 and RV-3.

haha thats me.... little thing rocks - - - it keeps up with my big amps for the wet side , and by itself can hang with a drummer pretty well actually. No issues with heat at all, i bring it with me to every gig for a back up.

I have one and used it with my Jekyll and Hyde pedal to drive a 4x12 on a float last 4th of July. Heat IS an issue. After running it at 1/3 volume it started to overheat and sounded bad. I bought it as a back up in case i had an amp fail at a gig. It think for a backup or wet dry it would be fine. Just stay out of the hot weather.

If it's in good condition PM me and send me a couple of snaps and we'll do the deal. I've been thinking of toying with one of these in a couple different applications and this sounds perfect.

Thanks,

Race

I run a 44mag using Kingsley tube preamp pedals as a backup and with the right preamp AND an EQ pedal it works great. The tube preamp really puts the missing dynamics back as its really sterile and flat sounding by itself and th EQ helps adjust things that bit further.

My Orange went down the other day but luckily I'd brought the 44.

It's surprisingly loud and it's seriously tiny. No heat sink inside...it looks like a toy TBH as there is virtually nothing in it.

I love mine and have never had any issue w/ it, including when using it in a full band situation. I'm using it it now in a W/D rig and it's great.

I've been seriously considering doing this. Good to hear it is working well for other people.

Damn that sounds impressive! I love that huge thunderous SMACK in the bottom end. Forget boosted Rectos, now that's some serious bass!

I guess the 44 Magnum is a Class D solid-state amp, in a pedal chassis? Basically a mini Crate Powerblock?

Hey Nick,

That thing sounds awesome, thanks for the clip!

I'm pretty much sold on this, so I'm going to pick one up in the near future aswell as another 2x12 cab. Then i can setup my new Wet/Dry rig for gigging. Will be really nice to get the W/D sound/width but without the hassle of carrying a big poweramp.

If you want to run a real portable slave rig, Id use a tech21 powerengine instead. I personaly think that they are more realiable and will sound better but that's just me.
Definitely more $$$ but worth it.
all IMHO

Hey Ralph!

Do they make that Power Engine as just a poweramp? Or do you have to buy the thing as a powered Extension cab?

The only issue i have is that i wanted to run V30's in the Wet/Slave cab, that's all

They don't unfortunately but I'm one of the rare few who likes the 70/80 speaker that comes loaded in the thing lol.

The stock speaker is easily replaced, although it does add and extra cost unless you have some speakers lying around.

I've been using the 44 in my wet dry setup for a few months and it sounds great...but I just ordered a Tech 21 powerengine for simplicity and to downsize. I'll report back on how it sounds.
I'm a scumback fan and have an extra M75, so I'll swap speakers if necessary.

Running two 2x12's sounds great but with 40 looming, I'm all about light weight and ease of use.

I've been using the 44 Magnum with really good results. I run it with either some Tech 21 Character pedals or a Digitech GSP1101 into a Boogie 1x12 Thiele EV cab and it's pretty loud. I've never pushed it that hard as I'm not using it for loud rock gigs but I've never had any heat trouble and I thought the idea behind the Class D design was to better dissipate heat. The only drawback for me so far is the power supply is bigger than the pedal. But that's not really much of a complaint as it's still 1/10th the size and weight of the MosValve power amp it is now replacing
