Just a very quick question - is the only difference between the 50 and 100 head the extra headroom the 100 offers over the 50 or are there any tonal differences between the two?

I haven't played a 50 watter. But I do own the 100. I've only used 50 watt amps before getting the 100 Watt Einstein. I personally don't know the defferences in tonality (if there is any) but personally I wouldn't go back to 50 watts unless I really like the amp. It does seem to have more/better headroom than my previous 50W heads. Tonally, the only thing I can think of is that you might get more saturated/cranked amp tones at a lower volume and less headroom.

I'm sort of suspect there will no tonal difference between the two amps apart form what you mentioned i.e. the earlier break-up/saturation at lower volumes.

I was just curious ;-)

but headroom can make a big difference.

I dont have the einstein but the herbert. When i had a engl se i could switch between 50 an 100 watt with just a push of a button. The headroom did make a difference, defenantly in feel. I would play the amp more often on 50w(at home and band practice).

just try them both if its posible.

I've heard both and yes there is a slight tonal difference contributing to headroom.. I liked the 100w a little better for this fatter heavy sound.. as a gigging musician I'd go with a 100 if I were to buy one.. If I played at home, I would not buy a diezel at all.. :)

What wou,d you do if you did both... from home studio to gig? :)

I know a guy who no longer gigs and plays his Herbert at home.

Hello MontyW.

The difference is that with the 50 watter you must stand closer to the cab you are powering in order to fully appreciate the articulation of the output.

The 100 watter you will need to take every and all pictures down - enjoy either one.

:D

If needed the cleans and a bit more articulation of the lower gain modes I'd get a 100w and an attenuator. Otherwise always the 50w for me unless gigging in large venues, tried both and love the 50w

I can't speak for the Diezel unfortunately (I only have the 50w), but when I had my Mesa Mark IV the 90w mode was a lot tighter, showed up playing mistakes a lot more, whereas the lower wattage modes were spongier and dirtier.

100w always will always sound bigger when comparing equivalent amps, no matter what volume you're playing
not only about the output, but the 100watters usually have larger transformers as well (not sure the einstein does)
