Looking to retube shortly, and Winged C's are getting expensive. What's your favorite EL34 in Marshall type circuits for rock and metal?

Get Ruby EL34B-STR if "Sino" or "Shuguang" is too pejorative looking, they're the same (and supposedly "selected")

Yes. Ruby EL34BSTR. I love them in my amps...

Steve

If you can find them the Siemens are very good in the Marshall's that I've had, as good as the Winged C's.

Lately I've tried RFT/Siemens, original Teslas, and new EH.

RFTs are clear. Tight lows, but subdued. Glassy highs. Mid range is good but not thick.

Teslas were very thick. More low-end punch. But a little mushy in the mid range. Highs were smooth.

EH has a very aggressive mid-range. Reminds me a lot of the RFT. Actually, very similar to the RFTs in terms of construction as well. They look like a clone of them. And they sound like it too. But instead of having to pay $$$$$, they are like $15 a pop.

Haven't checked into Ruby's yet, so it sounds like I should.

I've heard Tung Sol EL34B's can be overly bright in some amps from a few folks now. Anyone else experience this?

I'll check into the EH as well. I'd honestly never considered them.

I like 'em. A little more high-end than EL34s. And maybe a little more grain in the way they clip. Gold Lions are pretty good. JJs are a little lower quality in terms of construction from what I've seen. But sound pretty good too.

More highs (clarity) and more lows too! They are a bigger, cleaner sounding tube to my ears.

Ruby's are awesome. Don't be scared of the cheap price. Look into the company and you will see why they are so cheap and why so many people like them.

Nope, I use them and have never had a problem with brightness.

EH's are good too, probably the best bang for buck for their price.
