ELAN MK-5 DINO PREAMP - Opinions?

The quick NAMM demo vid of it on their website didn't do it any favors. It's dedicated to Dino but you play some grainy sounding, blues hard rock on it....

Yep it was an awful example of how it’s supposed to sound.

That sounded terrible to me.
Maybe it’s better in the room.

Sounded as though the recording mic was distorting.

Sounds nothing like the amp.

Definitely doesn't sound like that elan preamp linked in the other thread. They weren't kidding on the hard rock/metal emphasis. It really is soft rock voiced it seems and less metal.

Terrible demo. Seems obvious to play some riffs from the Demanufacture album to demo it, or at least something similar to that genre. Hopefully it sounds better in person. I have an Axis Excalibur preamp and it sounds far closer to the Demanufacture tone, especially when run through some tone-matched IRs.

The thread I linked starts out with the original Elan pre from the 90s, and ends with talk about the new release as someone grabbed one and clearly didn't like it.
That's the only review I've seen regarding the new version.

I almost pulled the trigger on one that guitar center has in stock right now in their used section for about $400. It does seem like they're just using Dino's name, as well as others, without the artist's endorsement to sell the preamps. I've also read that the original mods were unshielded, half-baked, rat nests, which is part of why the gate was needed in the first place and perhaps why they all sound different. The MK-5 doesn't even have bass boost or gain pull knobs like Dino's amps. Yeah, I'll pass... Thanks, all!

Had one here that was terrible. Great concept, but he totally missed the mark with the tone of it. Circuit was quite a bit different from the amp. The size and the idea of it was really cool.

I liked the the Marshall with FML mods you sold recently, but I had just bought another expensive high gain amp that kind of took me out of the game for a bit. If I get bored with one of my 800's, I might send it over to you for upgrades.

Don’t do it!

I have a Metalhead modded 800 that I absolutely love so I took the chance when these were released. I figured “How different could it sound?”. It doesn’t sound anything like the amp and now I have a paperweight with tubes. The concept is really cool, it’s a shame it doesn’t deliver the tone..

That being said, Metalhead mods in general are very inconsistent and most of them do not sound the way you would expect them to. You’re better off picking up a stock 800 and sending it to Jerry (FJA) for the FML mod. I played the amp he sold recently and it nails the “good” Metalhead sound.

The times I have thought this same damn sentence over the course of two decades

So i guess you had the same experience than me with the Dino MK V preamp pedal. I didn't had anything to compare to, but i was expecting something like the original Metalhead Elan MKII in the clip that Nick made a long time ago. I was pretty disappointed in the product.

Here is a better demo with some changes to the pre

Wouldn't it be better for someone to play some Dino-esque riffs? Some Fear Factory tones? I'm really not trying to be a dick but that video wasn't very inspiring. The thing is if the preamp did as prescribed I would be intrigued being a huge Dino/FF fan myself...

Anyone here have one and was able to chain it with other pedals !?
