Does anyone know what was used on master of puppets the EMG-81 or Gibson 500T I have seen several pics of James using both at this time in their career....

Invader has really unique looking polepieces. Pics of that era show his EXPLORERS with regular looking passives, so probably 500T. No EMGs till 87.

Gibson flying V has the Invader.

Jackson King V had passives of some sort. Not sure what guitar he recorded the album with.

always good to take a look at http://www.montyjay.com:

"I started using EMGs on the 'Ride the Lightning' Tour. They attracted me because of their tight low end." Guitar World, October 1991

on the album they used emg-81's same with kill em all. so 500T were oftenly used live.

EMGs were used on Puppets and onwards (switched during the RtL tour). Before that, it was the Duncan Invader in the White V copy and the 496R/500T setup in the Gibson Explorer.

I have that mag & he said that, but its false. He's either genuinely mistaken or purposely throwing out misinformation. There is not one picture anywhere that shows EMGs in his guitars on the RTL tour. I had all the metal mags back in 84, 85, etc.

Definitely not on Kill'em all.

emg-81's came out in 81 i thought

Possibly, but I doubt the 81 signifies that. According to a very old EMG catalog I have, they came out with their first design in the late sixties. Yeah I know, no one had one even in the 70's, but it was probably one guy experimenting in his garage before mass marketing them.
