Ive been looking for a set of emg's, I was looking for an 81/85 combo but ive come across a killer deal on a set of 2 81's for $50! Im wondering how the 81 would perfrom as a neck module for leads mostly, I know they slay in the bridge position but im thinking that they might be a little thin for a neck pickup ... anyone have any experiece with these?

Yes, they sound great in the neck just as much as an 85 sounds great in the bridge.

Almost all my guitars have 85's in the bridge and 81's in the neck. I just like that combo together in those positions.

EMG81 in the neck is one of my favorite tones ever.....and I dont even like EMGs!

Im gonna go for it, Its an incredible deal $50 for a mint barely used set of 81's with all the wiring and pots. Have to drive about an hour and a half to get em but it'll be well worth it after another $40 to have em installed in my epi LP custom (Im an outside of the guitar guy, Ive got a great local tech who handles all my inside the guitar stuff).. Should make the Les Paul Scream! I would have preferred to find a set duncan blackouts like i have in my charvel but alas ill have to savor the EMG's:)

Great for high gain leads, but terrible for everything else, IMHO. I've swapped an 85/81 combo around in my explorer, and in hindsight I think I should have tried to get a 60 to put in the neck instead...I love both the 85 and 81 in the bridge, but don't like either in the neck. Not sure if it's the guitar or just my personal taste...however, if you're focusing on leads it would be a screamer for sure! Happy Friday,
