Probably been done on this forum already, but I'm lazy and I want to hear your thoughts. Personally I've used both. My favorite high gain setup is the one I put together out of a beat up LTD EX351. This beast came with a pair of EMG's so I filled the neck cavity with a chunk of bubinga and threw in this Blackout re-wired for 18Volts (two 9 volts in series).

Blackouts IMO are garbage, extremely loud, not in a good way.
Thin on top with to much sizzle, not to mention my biggest beef, and
That would be individual notes, I do a lot of picking, single note stuff
And it gets mushy, noisey, total mess of notes.
EMG not much better with the 81, but I'm using the 57 now and I'm
Getting punch, lowend, and I can hear notes again.

EMG is giving me wood again

I agree. The blackouts are too hot and mushy. I was very disappointed with them.

i have been wanting to try the 57 for the type of stuff i do.

57 is perfect for the music I play, lots of chug patterns, odd time sigs and
Crazy riff'er madness.

I was also diappointed in the blackouts. I put a set my Jackson because, the claim at the time was, they were a replacement for the Livewire series. They sound weak and lacking tone compared to the Livewires, especially, the Livewire Metal.

I was going to ditch actives all together until I tried the Het Set from EMG.

In your opinion what's the difference between the 81 and the Het Set EMG's? I've been curious about them.

The Het Set sounds more like a high end passive. The output is still as high as an 81 but it is more mid rangy and has a bit more low end which may translate as not being as tight but I can play super fast Metallica riffs with them through a Mesa Roadster so they are plenty tight for me.
