Anyone know of any different ways to achieve the same effect without the vintage gear?
The fade out swirling growl at the very end.
I'm not really sure how it's done exactly in the original but you'd think there would be a contemporary way, or maybe not.
Thanks.

Floyd Rose with the MXR phase 90 switched on ? EVH used a Univox EC80 echo machine (like an Echoplex but really a POS) that he basically (I think) hooked a switch to the motor only so he could turn it off leaving the rest of the unit on to pass signal, as the motor slowed down, he got the descending note. The phase 90 has to be in the correct spot in the chain for it to sound the same (can't remember, either before the echo box or after). You can use any delay if you turn the time knob while holding the note.

Ok so a phaser but also turning the time knob on a delay?

Yes...see if you can find the video of Curt Mitchell doing it on the 'net somewhere...he explains and shows the whole thing in his EVH Style videotape/DVD.

Yep, turn delay speed down as final note is sustaining...

I saw that but I didn't think it came off very well. What did you think? I was hoping for something easier or more convincing, know what I mean?

I agree, but unless you REALLY wan to spend time looking for an EC80 (which is a total POS, I have one...) and modding it to turn just the motor off, you're kind of limited...the ONLY other options might be an Echoplex with a homemade "Hyperspace" (Tom Scholz) pedal or a Whammy pedal, but you need the phase 90

If you look up Pete Thorn's eruption tutorial on YT, taken some years back, he has great tips on tone and the piece as a lesson itself.

Yeah I've seen that too. It's a good tutorial.

I was just thinking with today's gadgetry there should be a way replicating it exactly, somehow. Just thought someone here might be in the know.
I'll check out the hyperspace option. I have a vintage phase 90, not a reissue. It's all rusted and crap but sounds pretty good, albeit noisy. I had to replace a cap in it because it was cutting out and the thing just disintegrated in my hands. Hasn't sounded the same since.

Don't ever get rid of that Phase 90, the old ones are awesome.

The Hyperspace pedal is just a mechanical linkage attached on one end to the Echoplex head slider and the other end is connected to an articulating pedal (like a wah wah that goes forward and backward AND side to side...NOT an easy thing to make, no one makes one. Scholz has the only one that I know of...

So what is the effect in your opinion, like if you had to describe it? I can't really hear repeats from a delay but it seems to go on and on. Is the growl from the phase 90 or is that just a subtlety?
It's a unique one.

When you crank the feedback/repeats on a delay, it self occillates creating that drone.

Like this, but you can't see him turning the volume down on the guitar before he drops the speed of the echo:

There is a lengthy thread on this somewhere over at Metro.

So crank the repeat (I'm assuming that's the same as regen?) then lower the delay?
Fucking awesome if that's all it is. That vid was close enough for me.
I'll have to test with my carbon copy, that's all I have right now.

I wonder why the volume drop on the guitar is needed?
I would think you'd need the feedback or sustain to keep it going.

At that point all the sound is coming from the delay. Turn down the guitar so you don't hit another note accidentally when you drop the octave with the pedal.

You can do it with just about any delay pedal. Just turn the feedback all the way up, hit the 12th note harmonic on the low E, then step on the pedal, turn down the guitar volume, and turn the delay time slowly until it goes down an octave.
