I just saw a video demo of the ENGL Special Edition E670 and was floored by the features and options on this amp. Does anyone here have any experience with this amp?

It's Good.

Very Compressed, but crank it and cry with a smile.

Go EL34 to cut through.

They are over the top, balls to the wall metal. For that application they are the best.

And its psuedo 5th channel which is basically a built in drive pedal with rear panel controls that hits the power amp (bypasses amp preamp) is AWESOME for bluesy stuff. It doesn't just do metal.

Very true.

Also a very nice Jazzy amp.

Had a friend who is a lot better jazzy type player try out the SE and he loved the clean channel over many of my other amps.
So I'd say the cleans are excellent.

Never tried one, but I got to fiddle with the knobs on the display dummies at the Engl office over at 3E in L.A. That was pretty cool.

I've owned the E570 preamp, granted it's not the same as the head version, it's pretty similar.
I wasn't a fan of the tone, especially for the price. Sure, there's like a gazillion switches and options, but it's not versatile at all. Pretty much every setting has the same voicing, whether you use a lot of gain or less. I doesn't do good crunch tones, it only does modern metal well. Might as well get a Fireball 100, as it does the job at half the price. I still own my E530 preamp and think it's a great unit for the money.

I would have an EL34 version if not for the price. Great amp, but if you're spending that much, get a VH4, custom Rhodes, etc.

The E530 is hands down the best value for dollar in the whole Engl lineup.

I've had the EL34 version for about a year now, overall I like it. I think it's only worth the price if you are really going to take advantage of all the tone sculpting options (which overall are pretty impressive). Unlike some 3-4 channel amps that may have 1 or 2 channels worth the price of admission alone, I haven't quite found that with this one. In fact, for simple pure metal, I actually like the sound of my Fireball 100 a bit more, but the SE certainly does not disappoint.

great sounding metal amp, i owed 2 of them and really liked the tones.
i wasnt happy with the build quality for the price and had issues with mine, i sold them but ive seen others that are happy with it. so maybe i owned a dud.

I have to admit they aren't the most well built amps...

somebody should buy yours because even if it cost 300 to 500 to fix it they would still have a great deal.

i cant recommend this amp when its 4000 new and has a 1 yr warranty, but for 2k i can justify it.

I bought an ENGL after reading some of your reviews of the ENGLs you owned in the past

i played engls for about 5 yrs staight and owned most of them, i always used to recommend them to people and my friends, but that was years ago and i havent owned one in years because of the way they treated me. its a long story and i cant be bothered going into it, hopefully they have changed things in the last couple years and will try and help their loyal customers better.

I've owned both. They may be the same preamp but the power amp and power amp voicing switches and presence knobs in the head make all the difference in this case. I never found a power amp that I thought worked well with the 570 preamp and there was always a difference in tone between channel 3 and 4 that i never could get balanced. With the 2 presence controls on the head, it was cake. Awesome head and it can do lower gain sounds well if you know how to dial it. I wasn't the biggest fan of the mid gain tones but mine did everything from death metal to sweet home alabama as well as an amp could, IMO. I never could get enough low mids out of mine with EL34s so I switched to 6L6s, biased them at the low end of the green lights to get more softness out of them, and really dug the tone.

I read a lot of your post detailing your experience with ENGL, I would feel the same way as you if I were treated the way you were

my fav tones came from the savage 120, blackmore, morse and engl se.

for a while i was a big fan of the powerball v1 but once i started playing the other amps i mentioned the powerball didnt sound as good to me, i also had a pb v2 and ive played the pb2.
