EQ pedal in amp FX loop... Definitely try

So I finally got an EQ pedal based on some recommendations to try one with my amps.

I picked up a Source Audio programmable EQ because there was a used one available for a reasonable price.

Was testing it out tonight, and I am blown away with how it completely transforms my amp tones.

A short clip I did this evening. The first part of the clip is just the raw amp, my Engl Savage. The second half is the tone with the EQ pedal running.

I used to like the tones I was getting earlier, but I am completely blown away with how good it sounds with the EQ on. Can't wait to try it with my other amps.

Based on my experience so far, I can definitely recommend that others try one in the loop as well.

Best trick ever!!
I been running a 10 band graphic eq in my loop last 15 years!
Refuse to play without it.
Welcome to the know.

Dumb question of the day...if you run an EQ in the loop, in what order would you place it with say a delay/reverb pedal and noise gate pedal?

In run a delay first. Then into the EQ.
Just so the the delay gets the effect from the eq.

Yeah man makes all the difference for me too. It makes even the best amps just a tad sharper and cut thru any mix.

I would not want to be without my MXR 10 band in the loop. It opens an amp up, removes boxiness, and adds 3D girth. It's made every amp I used it with much better....for me its a must. Recently grabbed an Empress Paraeq and I think I still prefer my MXR 10 band.

Same here. Must-have, for me. Been using one since about 2004.

I have had them, but then my amps start to sound the same.

But still, helluva trick.

Best trick in the book! It can take ur tone anywhere!!
For me its first thing in the loop so i see it an an extension of my preamp, then gate, mod, del, verb.

If I run a master volume box in my loop too, in which order to place EQ and MV?

MXR 10 band in the loop is absolutely part of my sound.

I like a lot of different EQ’s in the loop, but the black MXR 10 band can’t be beat for me.

I typically run it flat with a SLIGHT dip @ 500. I also, almost always, boost with an OD808, so the combination of a mid heavy boost with a slight dip @500 gives the feel and chug of scooping without actually scooping, so it still cuts ;)

Spot on Tony

if I cant do it with my eq thats supplied with the amp its the wrong amp..im also a plug straight in guy for the most part

Sorta like the Mesa Mark series.
They have a eq for each channel.
Then they have a graphic EQ.
Pretty much the same thing. Just takes the Amp and ‘amplifies it’ so to say.
My eq is damn near flat line. No extreme smiley face. :D
It’s definitely noticeable when engaged though.
Another 10 band MXR guy here.

Yes, Pre EQ and Post EQ. Completely different!

I use the parametric EQ on my Boss GT-10 through the fx loop of my amp. Great eq and noise free. It also has high & low pass filters. I cut all frequencies below 55hz and have a gradual low decline from 80hz and below. Eliminates the flubby bass. A wide Q cut in the mids at 500hz makes it sound brutal for metal!

like minds... ;) I'm using the Mesa 5 band in the loop of a D120, with a Ghoul boosting in front. HOLY SHIT sounds massive. The Mids are CRAZY GOOD. and killer chugging tone.

Haha...Ghoul screamer works great for a front end mid boost combined with 500hz cut via the loop!

I've tried it several times over the years and always felt it made my amps sound "artificial" for lack of a better word.

I know lots of other people get great results so I'm probably just doing it wrong :)

That’s actually what started the world of tone chasing for me.

I was 12 or 13 and had this Fender Champ (1x12, blackface with 1 preamp tube). I was REALLY into Eric Johnson and Gilmour (still am) and HATED the distorted sound coming from the amp, it was nothing close to either of them. My dad had this 4-space rack EQ he had in his stereo set up, we got some 1/4’ to RCA jacks and put it in the loop of the Champ and I was off to the races. It didn’t make the amp sound any closer to EJ or Gilmour, but I learned a lot about shaping sound with an EQ as a result.

My dad eventually made me buy my own GE-6 because he wanted that EQ back.

As for placement, I always put the EQ first and everything else after because ultimately, I wanted to change the sound of the amp, not the effects themselves.
