Eric Johnson-ish morphing dual-amp AxeFX Clip and Preset

This AX FX Ultra preset morphs between a Brownface and a MkIIc+. Plug an expression pedal into Ext 1 and you are ready to hit tunes that alternate with clean EJ type rhythms and woolly leads like Trademark, etc! It's cool because it morphs between them with a carefully adjusted fade parameter to make it smooth. I changed the delay to stereo. Not true to EJ, but sounds fuller. The delays still needs to get brightened a bit I think.

I didn’t have processing power left with all the other stuff to do a separate drive pedal hitting a Plexi for the distorted side, but this gets you close. The A side is a take off on the factory EJ preset. The B is really woolly and works with single coils and humbuckers. This one is definitely a compromise, but it works.

It sounds pretty good. But man.....I used to fuckin dig your Mod50/100 clips. That was some killer tone.

Right on man, I still have the LA Sound Designs testosterone rig, but it takes a whole Landcruiser to transport, and at least one band member, crew and about 10 Michale Phelps units to move. My six year-old could carry my light attack rig. Axe in 4-space rack and gig bag. Unreal.

even though i can still sorta id the linear quality of the axefx, it's still really cool tone and in the end if it makes you happy it's killer.

the biggest appeal to me about the axe is the size

That was simply stunning. Even being a tube snob, I'm seriously considering one of these units. Can anyone comment on how well they work in a live rig through a power amp (I use a Mesa 2:90)?

Right there man - thats it. The ability to share these presets is huge. This in itself is a big factor in getting people to try these thigns,how much easier can it get ????
 
Thanks for checking this out guys, yeah the preset sharing ability is really cool, huh? Dweezil Zappa's VH preset took me back to high shcool for an hour the other night. Was a very, very fun ride. :rock:

On A/B morphing, if you listen closely, you can hear that I have the clean amp panned a bit to the left and the dirty MkIIc+ a bit to the right in the preset for a bit of contrast, but not so much that the FOH could mess up levels by dropping one. When designing one of these type of presets, all you have to do is create a parallel amp signal path and selct a volume-related parameter alogn the way to map to the Expression pedal control of your choice so that one pedal is taking each up and down inversely. I just assigned it here to Exp 1 on the back of the unit to keep it simple for me and other users who wanna try it.

Sound great, although the guy playing has a lot to do with the tone!

Not enough processing power with the Ultra? Is this due to the fact that you were essentially two amp patches at the same time?

Seriously, EJ's whole thing, as I think I understand it, is a very delicate balancing act between two very touch-sensitive tones and amp/signal path settings, and neither play themselves like some classic tones that seem to be much more forgiving. These are not. I've really messed around with getting them through all types of gear and I can tell you that it is a recurring trope we beat on over and over, that over half of what you hear is in his...

Exactly. Two paths that could easily be tweaked furhter if they were on dedicated presets, but here I want them in one for control and morphing.
 
ej's clean tone man.....for me it's perfection. it's so analog and fat but there is so much sparkle from his fender pickups and amp, and the JBL speakers. but then there's the echoplex and jensen airy sweetness....

that tone blended with landau's golden rack era tales from the bulge clean tone....PERFECT.
 
I think the playing is great, but I'm not really a fan of the tone to be honest. I think it sounds a bit unnatural and over-processed. To be fair, I don't like a lot of effects on guitar, and I would probably like it a lot more if the mix was less wet.

To gradually switch from one amp to another is a great idea, though. One could mix tubes or Marshall/Mesa sort of tones and find a unique combination, like on those little Egnater and Blackstar amps...

john is a great player, period. never an issue.

i love effects and john does a great job with those too.

personally i'd prefer a little more looseness to the presentation--less rehearsed execution/coloring outside the lines here and there---both in his playing and tone.
