Took my
Plunge for some Eric Johnson Alnico speakers, EJ1250. It took me a few moments to adjust to. My first thought was that it was like a Greenback but spongier and without the crunch. Not overly bottom heavy, not dark. Very present but with no harsh or fizzing anything. Midrange is dominant, but in a very robust and rich smooth kind of way. Not a loose or messy speaker, but not razor sharp immediate. Very even with a great, GREAT feel. The magic began to happen when pushing it. Where most speakers get brighter or bassist or whatever, this one got more...stage ready. The mids were strong and present, sitting pleasantly above the bass lending mids but below the aggressive high mids. The highs themselves were present and clear but became round at the high notes, the bass was there enough to Lend a fun feel without ever intruding. It has a vintage howl to it that is ‘stage ready’. Beautiful tones. I’ve never used something quite like it, I am amazed at its character.
I don’t know that I would use this as my #1 pick for modern metal or anything of that nature, but for what I like to do and being in any type of classic rock or jam band or something, it’s magnifico.
Here’s a dry and not so great recording, but I wanted to capture this howling harmonic awesomeness that happens.
Here is a little clip filled with mistakes and bad notes.
