Friend of mine just got this ESP LTD H-1001.... Black, non trem, neck thru.

Purdy, well made, LIGHT WEIGHT..... wait.. it says "maple neck, mahogany body". Why the hell is it so light?

Some woods are lighter than others. That's just the way nature is. :)

Is that a 13th warrior refference?
Really though, ive played a lot of mahogany body guitars, done some woodworking etc. Id be amazed how light it was even if they said basswood!

Generally, asian mahogany is lighter than the stuff we got over here. Who knows? Maybe they just slapped some balsa wood on there and called it mahogany.

I heard alot of Korean made guitars marketed as Mahogany is Nato wood

My Gibson flying V is 100% mahagony and feels no heavier than a small tomahawk

What's a tomahawk to billiard ball conversion?

Because I have a strat that weighs as much as 12 billiard balls.

Interesting.. I just looked this up based on your post; sounds like its more popular in necks, also used in some bodies.
ESP only claims its "mahogany", & the guitar wasnt cheap, but it was from Korea.

I also didnt see much about Nato vs Mahogany weight, but hey, either termites ate 60% of the wood away or the wood (whatver it is) is way lighter.

ha thats weird I have a white ec1000 thats supposed to be all mahogany and its pretty damn heavy ...like a meaty les paul heavy, go figure

I've never heard of a Nato neck, wow.

Mahagony is not really that heavy, the LPs are heavy due to the thickness and the maple cap as maple is heavier and more dense than mahagony. My maple superstrat weighes more than most LPs.

I had 2, 2002 EC1000's Both had a good weight and sounded great
I had 3, 2004-2005 H400's all had a good weight to them and sounded great

I recently bought a new Ec1000 which was super light weight and returned it within 24 hours, sounded terrible, A friend of mine also bought a EC1000 on ebay last year which was also very light weight and didn't sound too great either so he sold it.

5+ years ago the LTD line was super consistent, i have found that within the last few years there has been a lot of inconsistency from guitar to guitar. And in my experience all of the super lite weight guitars have not been so great tonally, not saying that all light weight guitars are bad.

All of my guitars were mahogany body and neck with a maple top

Good to know... & thanks for all the input guys.

I will say, unplugged this thing sounds good; nice balanced resonance.
Plugged in.. well, its got EMG's & Im not a fan, but it seemed fine in spite of that. Id love to hear it with a Duncan '59 in the bridge.
