ESP Translucent Black Finishes

I have always hated ESP's transblack finishes. They look weirdly purple to me. There's a Horizon for sale in the classifieds with a transblack quilted maple top though that actually looks black. It looks killer. What's the deal with this? Was this a non-standard finish or something? Did they just accidentally do a transblack finish correctly one time? Why the hell do they always look purple to begin with? :mad:
 
They vary a lot, and the light can have an influence as well. I have an old LTD H-300 that used to look purple in incandescent light, but it now looks blue under 2700k leds.

It looked like a black to brownish charcoal on the ESP website at the time. Speaking of variability, I also bought another H-300 in trans blue a few years later that had a much thicker neck. I quickly sold it though...
