Ever Regret Taking a Gig/Session?

I seriously regret agreeing to do all the guitars for this project. I was hired to fill in for a band about 10 years ago and have remained friendly with some of its members. The drummer (who, by coincidence, was in a band with my wife when they were in high school) is doing a solo project and asked me to play on it. He wrote all the songs and played all the instruments on all the demos.

The problem is I am not a big fan of these songs. I like a lot of prog, but some of these songs have extremely long solo sections and have absolutely no groove to them. Some of these have time changes with every bar (10/8 to 7/8 to 10/8 to 13/8 to 7/4 to 10/4 to 7/4 to 11/4).

I will be sooooooo glad when I'm done.

Sure. I've played a lot of gigs because of relationships with players I've had over the years.
Disliked many of them, but did them anyway because I felt I had to.
It's ok, it'll be over soon. Just do your best, finish up and move on. You've made the commitment. Honor it.

I just finished a fill-in stint in a classic rock band. 10 dates of pure agony. The singer read lyrics off of an Ipad, the bass player could not play 1 song out of 50 all the way through without stopping, it was crap. I did it to pay for some of my furnace, it was replaced and I need to pay for it.

Never again......

Wow, how professional. Did anybody show up to these gigs? If so, did they stay long? I wouldn't stick around to watch a lead singer reading lyrics off of an iPad. Sounds like karaoke. Why not just fire the singer and call the band "Karaoke Classic Rock" and invite audience members up to sing classic rock hits from an iPad with a real backing band? Would give you more money to spread around across fewer guys......

I will certainly honor my commitment. I didn't mean to imply I wouldn't.  I honored all the gigs I scheduled before hurricane Isabel came into Baltimore which brought 3 feet of the Chesapeake Bay into my living room and had to rebuild. It's just that this one is more painful.

And now you probably get reminded of it every time you turn on the heat.

Kinda right now... 80's cover band with 3 of the 6 members being siblings so disputes get heated and real awkward, plus it takes me about half an hour south to get there, another half hour past that to most gigs, the drummer and bassist tend not to show up for practices (Leaving me alone with the 2 brothers and the sister awkwardly)... If I didn't enjoy playing live so much and they weren't the only ones within a hundred miles willing to let their lead guitar player sneak into the bar to play each time I'd have jumped ship awhile back...

Yep it happens to all of us at some point. Cut bait and bounce or stick it out. Sometimes preserving "honor" isnt worth the headache....but sometimes sticking around for just that very reason leads to other sweet forks in the road. Always a fluid situation determining whether to stay or bail, even with the best bands/worst members or crappy bands/great guys. Usually for me, drama, outside interference, and laziness will send me down the road....those things are unbearable for me.
