PffftOld EVH cab... he did this to decrease volume and keep the foam he taped to the front of the cab from smashing into his speakers... You just ruined a million dollar cab dude! ???

That stuff was common in the old days. Guys would do whatever they was necessary to tame the volume or get their tone . You had no choice . There wasn't attenuators and all this gear out now . I've seen pots run between the head and cabinet . It killed the amps but lowered the volume . You did what was necessary and some of it sounded great .I’m guessing it was to protect the speakers…but obviously it will affect the sound in a big way.
I’ve mentioned before that I use to run 3 grill cloths on an early JCM800 slant cabinet. It had large checkers, then basketweave, then black. It was a tight fit getting the baffle in, but it sounded great with H75’s. Keep in mind I used a slightly modded JCM 800 2204 with it. Many times I was running the amp on 6. It was stupid loud.
