I thought it would be good to have a general thread for AI.

TL;DR

AI is the new arms race. These idiots above are not putting in the time to protect you from the technological singularity, simply so that we may beat the CCP to punch. Taiwan is more important than many of y'all may realize. I say destroy the foundries before it's too late. Humans are dumb and selfish. Anyways, enjoy the decline.

Kinda seems inevitable, if it’s not just theoretical. …Taiwan has the capacity but not any unique knowledge right? Chip plants here are more technologically advanced I thought anyways.

As I mentioned before, I've been working in AI since the dark ages (late 1980s). Most people have no idea what so called traditional AI has already been doing for decades.

Generative AI that's easily accessible is making AI more publicity in the last few years; nvidia, and nearly every other tech companies are active in AI; there are chip prototypes for AI that use light waves instead of electricity; and quantum hasn't really been added in yet (though the Chinese are ahead of everyone here).

Every AI project I've worked on simplified human tasks and/or eliminated human tasks; generative AI is accelerating the expansion of AI; and as more money, people, tools and tech flow into AI it's going to keep accelerating faster.

Enjoy the decline. I hope to retire before I'm replaced by AI too. It'll be awhile before AI and robotics can sail a sailboat at least!

In February 2024, engineers at the University of Pennsylvania introduced a new computer chip that uses light waves to perform complex mathematical computations at the speed of light. This silicon-photonic (SiPh) chip could revolutionize artificial intelligence (AI) development by significantly increasing computer processing speeds and reducing energy consumption

I'll believe it when I see it. In the meantime I'm sure they claim they made an AI god that we need to obey, à la Wizard of Oz.

just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it's not there.

Long storytime....

my first AI system was for insurance health claims processing around 1987-1988; they had to train healthcare claims adjudicators on the insurance business, and train them to be computer users of the mainframe applications in CICS (before getting into AI, I was a CICS macro-level assembler programmer).

These systems were not very intuitive, usually monochrome (green) or four color (red white blue and green) and few people ever saw a computer back then let alone use one. The IBM PC and microsoft didn't exist yet; but there was the Apple MacIntosh, Commodore 64 and the Coleco Adam, and similar.

Senior claims adjudicators took many years of experience to get to senior levels. They were an expensive human resource to train and employ.

I was working with the senior systems developer who I happened to sit near thanks to serendipity, who became a mentor and he introduced me to AI; and a local college had a night class in AI computing, which I took. After I completed the class. the senior system developer and I had a discussion about AI and came up with the idea of using AI to do the work of the claims adjudicators automatically...

fast forward, we designed, and I coded, implemented, and tested, extensions to the existing CICS claims processing system to automatically process claims that were entered into the system by data entry clerks (mostly girls from high school and college who were good, fast typists - back then typing wasn't a common skill, and there were actually classes in high schools and colleges on typing!) who were paid much lower wages and didn't need to be trained as claims adjudicators; they just needed to type fast and accurately. We created a simple data entry screen that they could quickly enter claims data into the system, and my code would processes it without the need of a trained claims adjudicator.

The system worked great, and initially processed mostly simple claims; but as management's trust in the system grew we were able to expand it to process more complex claims...saving the company millions each year in labor costs.

Plenty more stories like that...

I believe in this degree of AI. And I realize there are different criteria for what constitutes AI, passes the Turing test and so on. But I thought we were discussing the sort of AI that can take on a life of it's own so to speak and become an actual threat to humankind.

That's coming fast. My point was AI has been doing many things for decades most don't know about; so is the new generative AI...

chips processing at light speed; quantum computing; ever growing data; new tech, many more skilled AI engineers every day; more tools, better tools,... it's inevitable; probably at least 5-10 years out though the tech is developing so fast it could be even sooner.

Perhaps it's been with us a few years now? A while ago I read about software called "Lucid Intelligent Sentient Awareness" that was believed to be on the way to an equivalent IQ of over 9000 by the end of this year. Personally, I think it's just a troll bot.

we're still a ways off from sentience; at best it mimics sentience due to the ability to identify patterns in very large datasets and dynamically apply / infer other patterns (educated guess), but still lacks basic intelligence criteria for actual sentience.

Here's once scientist's thoughts on AI sentience...and self-awareness.

I still think some technical advancements (lightwave chips, quantum computing) will accelerate AI capabilities.

Back in the '90s I used to tell my friends that IMHO "they" need to find a way for light transmission to work instead of electricity and copper in chips.

I'm just a luddite who knows nothing, but it seems I wasn't far-off-the-mark?

Not at all! Back in the 00s - 10s, researchers were looking for pure blue lasers / violet because the wavelengths are shorter; shorter wavelengths hold more data...superconducters were another area of chip resource because of the reduced resistance which increased transmission speed.

so far none of these have been practical, but that is likely changing.

Then there's quantum computing...+ AI; but...
