It's still very much a 5150; it's just more refined sounding. It's got a lot more clarity than the Peaveys, and the clean channel is great on it too.joepete77":3hq0ka71 said:I'm clueless with these as well. My question is is the 5153 closer in tone to the old peavey 5150 amps or a hotrodded Marshall ?

We played live, no overdubs with two guitars just playing our parts; old blues, 50's rock and roll, 70's rock songs and the amp sounded so good. We did one original song that's kinda of a ZZ Top boogie thing and I was able to get a very convincing Angus lead tone with the gain at just under noon on the blue channel. I've owned mine since they came out and can't see any reason to buy another amp for what I do. Maybe a kemper or axe just for fun...

Question; wasn't there some business of early version 5153 tubes vs. the current production 5153 tubes? I seem to remember hearing/reading some such claim; different tubes. Not sure if true and what end result effect was netted.....just curious, but I do love the mini5153.

Originally the 5150 III shipped with Sovtek 6L6WXTs in the power section and a mix of Sovtek (WC and LPS) and EH preamp tubes, before switching to all JJs. Personally, I think the amp sounds much better (for what I like) with the orginal Sovtek/EH combination. Also, every 5150 III I've tried with the original tube combination had more gain (especially on Channel 2) than the ones I've tried with all JJs. The JJ loaded 5150 IIIs I couldn't quite get quite enough gain out of Channel 2 for what I like for heavy rhythms, where with the original tube combination I can run it at 3:00 and have plenty. Just my opinion. YMMV.
This is correct. I've traced it down to about the first 1000 heads with this tube combo. Personally I also like the EVH/Sovtek mix more. I felt the gain of the amps with JJ's were too sterile and seem to have a bit more fizz.meanstreet":3cbe8bd8 said:MrDowntown":3cbe8bd8 said:Stramm8":3cbe8bd8 said:I just finished up a sound track of covers with my band for a musical production last week with my 5150 3 mini last week.
