EVH 100w - I'm a little late to the party

Saw Gary Hoey using it last Sat on the Guitar Gods tour. His tone was great, especially on slower tunes wnere he played very much in the Gary Moore/John norum style. He was riding the Red channel most of the time for solos, and it was the Stealth model. The 100w really cut live. Of course when he joined Yngwie and Bumblefoot later, Yngwie drowned out everybody.

I'm clueless with these as well. My question is is the 5153 closer in tone to the old peavey 5150 amps or a hotrodded Marshall ?

I run mine with a Mesa Recto 412. Sounds good to me.

That's A pretty damn awesome recording job there dude! Mixed very well for what I assume is a "camcorder".

And the 5153 cuts right through.....very nice.

It's still very much a 5150; it's just more refined sounding. It's got a lot more clarity than the Peaveys, and the clean channel is great on it too.

Pretty accurate. I think they also don't sound as "nasally" as the old 5150/6505. They sound much more open and fill the room.

Do the mini's pack enough of the same punch as their larger brothers? The price point is certainly very friendly on those..

The mini is awesome. I sold my Stealth and my standard 100 watt 5153 and kept the mini. All three are great, but the mini is my favorite.

Thanks. The videos were actually recorded with an iPhone.

I just finished up a sound track of covers with my band for a musical production last week with my 5150 3 mini last week. We played live, no overdubs with two guitars just playing our parts; old blues, 50's rock and roll, 70's rock songs and the amp sounded so good. We did one original song that's kinda of a ZZ Top boogie thing and I was able to get a very convincing Angus lead tone with the gain at just under noon on the blue channel. I've owned mine since they came out and can't see any reason to buy another amp for what I do. Maybe a kemper or axe just for fun...

Question; wasn't there some business of early version 5153 tubes vs. the current production 5153 tubes? I seem to remember hearing/reading some such claim; different tubes. Not sure if true and what end result effect was netted.....just curious, but I do love the mini5153.

I just finished mixing my band's latest EP, and I used my 100 watt EVH with the EVH 4x12 cab. I love both my 100 and my 50. Our last release I used my 50 watt with the EVH 2x12.

It's metal, so YMMV...

100 watt through EVH 412:

50 watt through EVH 2x12

Recently got a Stealth and digging it, changed a couple pre tubes to lower the gain and it sounds a lot better than it did, less metal which is a good thing for me.

I'm not sure what you're referring to but mine came with JJs. As a matter of fact, I'm still using the the original tubes it came with. Sounds fine to me.

I had the 100w, but sold it.

Loved it, but not playing out anywhere, so I couldn't really justify keeping it around. :(

I will probably get the 50w later (if I start playing out).

Originally the 5150 III shipped with Sovtek 6L6WXTs in the power section and a mix of Sovtek (WC and LPS) and EH preamp tubes, before switching to all JJs. Personally, I think the amp sounds much better (for what I like) with the orginal Sovtek/EH combination. Also, every 5150 III I've tried with the original tube combination had more gain (especially on Channel 2) than the ones I've tried with all JJs. The JJ loaded 5150 IIIs I couldn't quite get quite enough gain out of Channel 2 for what I like for heavy rhythms, where with the original tube combination I can run it at 3:00 and have plenty. Just my opinion. YMMV.

Yes. That was the deal, thanks for clearing up. Not sure if it was a problem, or just a personal user preference that had panties wadded about the initial tube set vs the current tube set; to each his own I suppose.

I was, and have been gassssing for a mini, bought a hand wired 50w from valvestrom instead, which I love. But, a mini53 is in my near future, because really, a man can't have enough gear.

This is correct. I've traced it down to about the first 1000 heads with this tube combo. Personally I also like the EVH/Sovtek mix more. I felt the gain of the amps with JJ's were too sterile and seem to have a bit more fizz.
