I have had this my second 5150-3 50 watt head for 10 months now and I am curious to what kind of power tubes that any of you EVH users use in your heads, and what and why you are using them ? I have always run the JJ's 6L6 GC's and they work really good in my amps, but I was searching online for options and I have seen some Tungsol 7581 power tubes that I have read a few short reviews about and they get 4 star ratings, but they were not used in an EVH 50 watt head,so wondering if anyone here has used these and what their opinion is of them ?
I had 2 full sets of Quad Groove Tube 6l6 S power tubes with a 6 rating/mediums and tried a pair in a Randall RD 45 H head and they brought the amp to life with a lot of punch, really pushed the speakers hard but in a good way,but I am not sure if those would be ok in the EVH amps,so looking for suggestions. The plate voltage in my amp sits around 490-500 if this helps to know.
I play high gain metal pretty much all the time on the Red channel on the amp and have the stock EVH 2-12" with original Celestion 12H30's.
I only have experience with Tungsol preamp tubes and not sure if their power tubes are really bright or have similar sound characteristics like their preamp tube 12ax7 re-issues.
I don't have extra $$$ to spend on power tubes so I need to get it right w/out having to keep trying other brands,if thats possible,so I might end up just staying with the JJ's,but just wondering what others are using ? Any info appreciated.
