Hi everyone,

Just looking for some input from the group about my EVH 5150 iii 100Watt head/cab (purchased new in 2012) making a loud POP sound when I turn it off. I always put it to standby first then power off and have even tried simply turning off the power switch. No matter what I do, 8 times out of 10 the system powers a very loud pop through the cab speakers when powering off. I also have the unit plugged into a surge protector power bar. This is the second head I have had do this and I am really concerned about it being or becoming a major flaw in the system that will cost me huge $ to repair. I am worried that it is going to blow the speakers or something in the electronics. Has anyone else experienced this? Any info is appreciated, thanks.

Rick

This may sound like a dumb question but how long do you wait after switching to standby, before you flip the power switch?

Hi Phil...nope, not a stupid question. I usually wait about a 5-10 count before powering off after switching to standby.
Cheers,
Rick

May have to wait longer. Since this has happened to you with more than one head it is most likely something you are doing. I would be surprised if it still occurred after waiting 30 seconds.

That seems like a reasonable amount of time... I am really not sure what else it could be honestly. I personally let mine cool down for a few minutes before I power my rig down. That doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong tho. It may in fact be a design flaw with the amp or something. I have 0 experience with the EVH amps though so I don't know.

I kind of agree with this... Let it cool down for at least 30 seconds or a minute before you power it down and report back... Like I just posted, I personally wait 2-3 minutes myself. Always have.

I will try that and see if any difference. I know that I have flicked it to standby and left the room for 20 minutes and then powered it off and still had it happen. I live in a house with neighbors close, so my volume has never gone past 2 on a 1-10 scale. So it is not like I am beating the crap out of it. My sales guy at the store says there has got to be something wrong with the heads...just seems odd to me. I take really good care of my gear and it never gets moved from place to place, not moved in the room. I am at a loss and very frustrated with it. I love its sound and performance but this is nuts!

Mine has never done that regardless if its on standby for any amount of time or if I turn it off without putting it on standby first.

Frustrated because you get a pop when powering down? Is there more to this problem?

Ask Howard Kaplan. He designed the 50w version but is an excellent source for all EVH amps. He can be found at TGP, or the 5150III Facebook page.

I have had the 100w for 6 years and the 50w for 2 years. Only pops when I consecutively turn off the power immediately after turning on standby. If I wait 20 seconds, no pop.

In your case I guess the first thing to try is swapping out power tubes, but I would contact Howard first to save time.

Thanks man, I will look him up! I really appreciate the info.
Cheers,
Rick

Listen, i have the exact problem with my 5150 III. Here's where my problem came from: the effects loop, apparently if whatever i have in the effects loop is on, then when I power off it'll cause a loud pop. So I just made sure to turn off the effect loop before powering off, problem solved
If you have things running in the effects loop, try this and see. Let us know how you make out. Good luck, man.

AHA! That may be the problem, I usually have my effects loop on...dang, never thought of that! I really appreciate your help. I will try it out later tonight and see if it corrects it.
Thanks man!
Rick
