It seems like people on this forum like the 5150 III cabinets more than the heads.

I've heard so many mixed reviews on the head. I played one side by side with a 5150 II one time and it basically sounded identical to me. I'm not sure if I'm missing something or what. Chime in, folks!

I personally dig the heck out of the head, one of my all time favorites and definitely my favorite for recording at lower volume. I have owned the EVH 4 times (insert laughter) the second one twice. There are other amps I really liked as much or better when just playing them in a room (Budda SD80 or 45/VHT Deliverance) but they did not record as well for my tastes. I live in an apartment, so low volume is a must.

I have owned a few 5150s over the years, I personally don't find them that close... The EVH is more Fendery and has a clearer/quicker response, the 5150 has a broader midrange roar and the gain is more saturated... YMMV

The cab is cool, but it is too vintage Marshall for my ears, and it sounds best when the amp is cranked loud. I prefer the Genz G-Flex with a couple ports closed, or an older Genz 4x12 I have... I guess I am an Eminence guy

While they may not be the best clips, all the clips at my myspace are the EVH, All the leads are the Blue channel with a BB preamp goosing it a tiny bit, rhythms are 1 blue channel-1 red channel

I hope it helps!

Lance

I love my 5153,to my ears channel 3 on the new amp is more organic and less harsh versus the older peavey II amp...I do prefer the new amp with its 5153 cab over my pre rola greenbacks .its just matched to those speakers...

I had one on loan for a few months and dug it a lot. The highest gain channel was beefy and tight. The mids had a bit of a snarl to them. I liked the sound of single note/solo lines with the neck pup, but not so much with the bridge pup. The clean and crunch were way better than those of the I or II. All IMO of course.

only amplifier that exists that gets easier to play the louder you get. it is both responsive and sounds awsome too. IMHO alder guitars sound phenominal through it.

theres a cleanish thing in the type of gain it has going on. i dont know if i like that or not, its hard to explain.

i have been toying a 2nd amplifier, and the 5150 III keeps coming to mind. its either that, or i build a prototype model amplifier sooner than i expected.

channel 2 of the EVH definately has something going on that channel 3 doesnt, but channel 3 is still my favorite.

i just hate the fact it doesnt have as much balls as my 5150 II, there arent any resonance controls, and the on/standby switches are in the back.

Switch positioning is a silly reason to dislike it. You should have memorized which is which by now anyway :D

Resonance controls... a lot of amps don't have them. You're just thinking too comparatively (as am I).

My friend has an endorsement deal from Fender. I may get one through him for dirty cheap ;)

when $1,600 are in the mix, the switch positions matter even though the orientations are the same

if you can find one used/get a deal then thats the best way, let us know how you like it.

I love the 5150 III's haha. Also the thing about the switches is trivial to me. In fact I think having them on the back is a better idea IMO of course.

It's an awesome live amp..

I didn't really enjoy it until I got it out live...
easy to play, touch sensitive and a serious gritty rock edge!

works better with a nice medium to high output pickup...doesn't seem to favor my low output paf's

This confuses me a bit....pretty much every tube amp I've played gets that compression going as you turn it up. They all feel better at volume.

I'm curious as to what you mean.

You guys are giving me GAS!!
I have to confess that im a Diezel guy through and through but i LOVE this amp.! Im thinking about getting one. Everything said above is true. Easy to play and great tone. Not that fond of the Cleans. I first heard them live when we were playing shows with Disciple then when we went on tour with High Flight society. Then naturally i had to play theirs during sound check. Instant amp envy...

If I ever get my 5150 III fixed I'll let you know.  I thought mine sounded stiff and overly bright. I then had problems with channel 3 cutting in and out. I discovered I had a loose tube socket in pre one. I haven't had an opportunity to get the amp fixed yet to see if that was the cause of the "bad" tone issues.

then dont ever plan on owning a 5150 II.

its different than a compression feeling... its more like how the amplifier tracks to your fingers. like you cant feel "free" persay on the fretboard or feel confident when you play it. it teaches you hand muting control thats for sure.

the 5150 block letter series or the 5150 signature series from peavey dont have this problem, but 5150 II's in their design are extremely stiff to play... you fight the amplifier no matter how loud you get until you get to about 6 on the volume which is louder than anyone would ever need in a tube amplifier. granted the tone gets better from compression like you mentioned, but its stays pretty hard to play.

5150 III plays better at higher volumes than it does at lower volumes - its also easier to play dynamically and literally. the easiest amplifier to play at any volume i believe. almost effortless. it puts the playability of my 5150 II to shame.

BUT - my 5150 II has more balls and more umph to the 5150 III.

im in the process of correcting that issue in my 5150 II right now. would be an awsome amplifier afterwards.
