I was thinking about getting the EVH 5150III Stealth 100 watt head. Any thoughts on this ? I am stuck on this one and don't know if it is the looks or the video's I have been watching or what ? Strange.

I just grabbed a Stealth half stack last week. For reference, I've been gigging a Bogner XTC for the last 15 years or so. The Bogner needs some TLC, so it was time to find a quick replacement.

What kind of music are you into? The Stealth is a gained-out, mean-ass, pissed off sounding amp. If you're into rock, I say grab one and see what you think. It can cover a ton of bases if you don't mind spending a little time with it.

I'm really digging it so far. It was touch-and-go for a while because it seemed like it just had way too much of everything. For my tastes, I found lower output pickups and LOW gain settings (around 9 o'clock give-or-take on blue and red) were the trick. For as much gain as it can put out, it's articulate and punchy. Sounds AMAZING at low volumes too.

pardon my mental handicap how do you know if its a stealth head? the reason I am asking is I just bought one and a 2X12 EVH cab

This is the Stealth model.

If yours does not look like this, then it's a regular 5150 III.

Also, the Stealth model has 3, Resonance controls at the back of the amp. One control per channel.

I preorered my stealth a couple of weeks ago from sweetwater. it should be here in march.

Is the Stealth a dark sounding amp? I know it's not Marshall, high-mid kinda bright but I would hate for it to be overly low-middy and woofy.

Not in my opinion, especially the blue channel. The red channel is a little darker with everything set identical to blue, but honestly, the range on every knob on the amp is astounding. You can go way over-the-top in either direction. With EQ at noon on blue, it's actually a little too bright and bitey for my tastes, but it was NO problem getting it where I wanted it. With High and Presence controls in particular, a little goes a long way, much more-so than any other amp I've owned. Resonance controls really help shape the lows too. I'm using it with an EVH 4x12 and even in its current un-broken-in state, it's got a great punchy, present bark to it. I'm sure that will smooth out in time, which is just fine with me.

I had the 50w head and had MAJOR problems with woofy lows and flubbing, even with the blue gain set at or below 9 o'clock and resonance way down. Not sure if I had a dud or what, but I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. For me, the 100w Stealth, particularly in the feel and response area, isn't anything like the 50w I had thankfully.

For any of you that have owned or played a Bogner XTC and sometimes wished it had "more" (like me), you should consider this amp. It can also go WAY beyond if you want, but don't be afraid to try some unorthodox EQ and gain settings. I apologize if I sound like I'm gushing. I'm still in honeymoon phase, but it's a very well thought out and great sounding rock amp regardless, which I wasn't expecting after my experience with the 50w.

You've got me interested. Looking to check one out soon. Hard to find though!

Is it new, from the new run presented this NAMM ?

Not sure. Are you saying there are different versions, or do you just want to know which run it came from? I haven't been following the build runs on these so no idea off the top of my head. It's brand-new, but I don't know how long it had been there before I got my grubby hands on it.

New run comes with Chinese tubes in the power, I suspected GT. I wanted to know if they're high ratings ( 8-10 / red) or not.

GT 6 rating (medium). Label shows two values: Performance = BBL, Matched = 6. Anyone know what BBL means? I can't find anything on their website.

Spent a ton of time with it yesterday. Just installed an EVH Frankenstein pickup in my Charvel So Cal for fun a few days ago. Great combination!

You should check out this demo...not talking in it, mind you...just the amp performing.

Not sure if this guy hangs here at RT, but chops, he possess.

I hadn't heard those, but they're a good representation. 2nd clip is red too I think, not blue. He said his gain was around 6, which is insane on the red, but you can hear how articulate it still is, for that amount of gain anyway.

This is the one amp that I am gasing for as well. I don't really need it but that hasn't stopped me before!

I think the letters ( BBL ) are related to the position in the test/match equipment or the VTV socket tester ... I suppose it's something that really does not matter. What is important is that rating in numbers.
Are those tubes GT 6l6 GE (clear top) or GT 6l6 CHP ?

It seems like it would be the perfect amp doesn't it. I know there are several mods for the regular 5150 III amps now. I like the self adjusting bias on the stealth. It seems like they have thought everything through. Have you guys ever wonder why amp company's don't just produce a super modified amp right out of the box ? I would rather have an amp to dial back a little then adding or getting it modded. I think Randall is kind of doing that a little bit. I have noticed the resale value of the 5150 III amps are fairly good. So they seem to be holding there value.
