Evh 5150iii users

fellas I owned a 100 watt a few years and dumped it quick. Just picked up another, a lot of guys say boost chan 2 which I tried and it sounds like crap lol. Chan three is not boostable if you ask me but any help would be cool . Tips tricks etc . Bias is at 35ma .

I want to like it but

Played it out of a Marshall 4x12 with v30's 16ohm . I have other v30 8 ohm cabs also.

I must be missing somthing . I have owned like every high gain amp and still own a few and I find this amp not boostable is turns into a mess.

You talking about the 50 watt or 100? I may mod it for resonance pots

set your bias down to 30mA. I boost mine with a EP Pre and have gotten good results.

Set bias back to 32ma with the stock JJ's . I'm going to install resonance pots for all three chains . When boosted that's what I'm not liking about it the palm mutes sound weird in this amp it need resonance pots . Think that's why the 50 watt sounds better.

Think I found on the layout R4, R5, R6 are the fixed resistors for resonance. Would have to remove those and install three 1 meg pots to each resistor . Has anyone done this to there 100watt?

its a very simple mod.
1. remove c23. on my 2014 it was done from factory. older versions still have c23. removing it makes the amp seem more lively.
2. reduce r25 from 180k to 100k. i soldered a 220k in //(piggyback) with the orig 180.
3. snip one end of r26. this way in case you want to reverse its just a matter of resolder one end of r26. or remove it completely if you decide you like.

this mod will give you the 50 watt blue channel in a 100 watt pkge,
works great.

I use an Echoplex style pre amp boost and a TC Spark Mini Boost depending on my mood. Both work great. The TS style boosts seem to nasally to me. Just my opinion.

Modded the amp to stealth chan 2 today what a difference! Wow . I like the amp now ! A lot more gain on chan 2 and has more shape to it . NOW the amp is boostable gain less than half on blue Chan. Really made the amp . Boosted with my dead horse it just slays.

Get something at least similar to the EVH cab (ala Greenback type speaker) and stay away from those v30's and see what you think.

Channel 2 boosted is great, maybe "sounds like crap" for extreme metal but I have yet to hear a boosted channel 2 not sound good.

I love that someone says it sounds like a solid state amp and that's why people like it.

To the OP, if you sold it that quickly the first time, buy another and still don't dig it, then I think it's time to move on to a different amp.

Edit: oh yeah, and after trying many different cabs a Mesa 4x12 with v30's is my fave.

I dig it now after a few mods it sound great !! For sure a keeper

I for one think it sounds awesome threw v30's . I have a greenback Marshall cab that I tried also . V30's sound great ! Amp loves my Mesa , diezel, and Marshall cabs. All v30

Just want to add the resonance pots to the amp . r4, r5, r6 are the resistors I believe just need to confirm that . I'll prob call EVH tomorrow

I'm going to grab the EVH 4x12 soon as I did like the greenbacks for 80's tones . Amps killer with modded blue chan . The beef with the old amp was not enough gain for chan 2 . After I modded it problem solved . The amp sounds great non boosted as well . Kind of blown away by it now
