EVH 5153 50 Watt - Wow!

I'd leave one H30 and get a Hellatone V30. Like I said with all the 4x12 cabs I've used with my 50w my second favorite after the EVH 4x12 is my Splawn 4x12 with V30/H30 X. Plus buying one speaker is cheaper than two new ones. Odds are you can find a clean used Hellatone V30 for the same price you can sell your H30 Hellatone for and if you don't like it you're back at square one with no real $ out of pocket.

The V30 brings more mids and a darker voice into the mix where the H30 is brighter up top with a tighter bottom. So they tend to balance out each others EQ well.

That damn EVH 4x12 really is the goods eh? I hear clips of that cab and it always sounds great. I wish they made those speakers in 8 ohm though. I'd love to pair one with a higher powered weber 65 watt legacy in a 2 x 12. AS for G12h30's, great clean speaker, great bottom end and grit BUT those bloody piercing highs were also the death of me. I had to get rid of mine.

What exactly are the speaker differences in the 412 and 212 again? Someone mentioned it on here recently, but I can't remember. Do they sound much different? I want the 212 but everybody online is raving about the 412.

Okay, found the speakers in the catalog... 412 has G12EVH and the 212 has G12-65. What's the sonic differences between those?

The catalog is wrong. The 2x12 speakers are Celestion G12H 30 Anniversary (not Heritage) speakers. I have the same speakers in my Splawn 2x12, as Hellatone 30's, broken in, and I'm not diggin' them at high volumes.

I have determined I do not like the Hellatone 30's at high volumes. I cranked this amp up halfway and the Hellatone 30's in my Splawn 2x12 seem to get too gritty/fizzy/piercing.

For those who don't know, the Hellatone 30s are broken in Celestion G12H 30 Anniversary's; the same exact speaker the EVH 2x12's come with, so...hmmmm

The amp has a GREAT EQ range and my pickups seem to be so much clearer in every position. I love the cleans on this amp.

I'm on a budget, so I'm looking at WGS. They recommended a Vet30 and ET65, where the Vet30 is not as bright as the Invader or Reaper (like a Hellatone), they handle more watts, and the ET65 is a darker more balanced speaker. I was thinking the higher wattage GB, the Invader mixed with a Vet30. I don't want super bright speaker, b/c the amps presence can add so much already. I want more control at the higher volume.

Thoughts?

Even though the Hellatone 30's claimed to be broken in speakers, they may still take some more breaking in. Celestion G12H30's are notorious for taking a long time to brake in. Also one person's bite is anothers fizzy, piercing, etc. Some would describe that as bite. As you might have guessed I am a fan of the Celestion anni G12H30's, but I rarely run them at high volumes and do know what you mean about them being a big bright/harsh on the top end at times.

As for WGS, I would check out their Reaper or Reaper HP

My Celestion G12H30's did take a decent amount of time to break in but they sound great. As for the EVH412, I think that is one of the best sounding 4x12's I have ever heard.

Today I cranked up the EVH Fiddy again and it was starting to sound a LITTLE better. Man, this EQ on this amp is just amazing. You can really do so much with the sound of this amp. I have noticed that if you set channels 2 and 3 identical, they can sound the same, BUT 2 has a bit more 'oomph' to it, it seems. 2 is very liquidy and just nasty. I can't imagine anyone getting lost in the mix. I think I've read that the Fiddy is brighter than the 100 and that wouldn't surprise me.

A few development on my cab. Today I noticed that certain notes at the high volume made the back of the Splawn rattle. Any idea what could be causing this rattle? ...I'll start another thread on that, I guess. I've already emailed Splawn to see if they can help. You can't hear the rattle while you're play at that loud of a volume and it certainly doesn't rattle at lower volumes.

Have you checked to make sure that both speakers are working in your cab? Do you have access to another cabinet to run the head through to see if it sounds any better?? The only reason i ask is that I had a similar problem with my Mesa 2x12. Sounded fine at low volume but the louder you cranked it, the worse it would sound. I tried 3 or 4 different heads through it and it turned out to be a bad speaker. I put a new one in and problem solved.

I will have another cab to try this weekend. I plan on getting a WGS speaker to pair with one of the Hellatones, but I could not tell for sure if it was the cab or the speaker. I'll have to crack it open, I guess to see if it does it with an open back. Thanks for the suggestion!

Regardless, this amp is like a dream come true. I love how responsive the EQ is and I'm surprised more reviews are not mentioning this aspect of it.

Im using mine live tonight with open back 2x12 with can rex and red white and blues we will see...

Has anyone tried a 5153 with a splawn cab with smallblock speakers? I have an sb loaded splawn 4x12 and may have a 5153 mini coming soon :)

I like this head. I played the 100 watt head through the EVH cab. I am not the biggest Greenback fan because I find them too fizzy, but mostly don't like the 25 watters. The clean sounds great but I already have amps that get a great clean. The blue channel I already have covered with other amps but the third channel is really nice but I think I prefer a Bogner or Splawn for the heavies. The EVH third channel for me has way too much gain...for me, not something I would use much, but I think it is a killer amp and know lots of guys who drool over it.

I run mine with a Fulltone OCD version 1 and love it. I dig the amp by itself also. Used it that way for a few years but I recently hooked up the OCD and haven't turned it off yet.

I ordered the 50w and two 2x12 cabs from Brad recently.

Was really disappointed at first. The amp seemed so cartoonishly over-the-top. I've been gigging the same Bogner XTC 101B rig since the late 90s and the poor amp has been dying a slow death for the last few years (needs some TLC). But I've gotten so used to that tone.

After that initial day with the EVH, I put it away to sell. I broke it back out last night on a whim, and took it to band rehearsal. The only thing I can compare it to is that "WOW" feeling you get with your first pair of glasses after not realizing how bad your eyes were. Kinda' like seeing your first HDTV.

I spent rehearsal tweaking it, and I'm glad I did. I had the balls and punch I've been missing from my XTC lately, while still being in that chewy, barky tonal area I like. It's like an exploded, less-refined version of of the XTC, if that makes sense. Just needed to get used to it and hear/tweak it within the context of the band. Haven't really had to do that in years.

I may be the odd man out on this one, but I really dig the red channel! In my amp at least, it has quite a bit more body than the blue, which is a little more boxy and mid-focused. I think I run the red gain a lot lower than some of you. You guys running it at 2 o'clock and up...no idea how you get away with it. It's insanely saturated. I settled in between 9 and 10 o'clock and it could almost be a one-channel amp. I prefer a cleaner, punchier OD to a gained-out one though. Full up on the guitar...AIC heaviness, easy. THE most impressive thing to me was how well the highs cut through, even when I messed around with the gain set way up. I think that's why the amp cleans up so well with the guitar volume. At my 9 o'clock gain on the red, I can roll back and get a respectable clean, especially with single-coils.

For you roll-back-the-volume-for-clean guys like me, the EVH could easily be a one-channel amp, on either blue or red.

I play in a loud, six-piece tribute band with a pretty dense mix and I barely had to open it up. I can assure any and all doubters out there that it has way more than enough volume for just about anyone or any situation I can think of.

Let the honeymoon period begin!

Nice. Now just go midi and you'll never look back!!

Enjoy

It's an amazing amp, especially at that price point.
