EVH cabs... how are they?

How do these compare to Marshall cabs in terms of sound and quality? Are they well put together? Are they the same dimensions as Marshall cabs?

I see the specs mention they have a pine baffle and plywood back and sides. How does this affect the sound? How thick is the plywood? Is it Marshall-thickness or is it thicker like Orange?

I have a Marshall 1960A that sounds great, but it doesn't seem all that well put together on the inside. Wonder if an EVH 4x12 would be an upgrade.

Thanks!

They are nice cabs; maybe not as ‘snappy’ as a Marshall but still sounds good. I had one a few yrs back. Sold it....I have a Peavey Butcher K85 cab that kinda reminds me of the EVH cab, in that the response is less ‘snappy’ than my Marshall cabs. Not sure how else to describe it. Good cab though.

Not as snappy is a good description. I feel they sound softer to the ear. To make more pronounced it is nothing that a little eq'ing cant fix. I run my EVH in conjunction with my Friedman 412 (GB25/V30) and it really fills in the gaps nicely as the Friedman 412 is really pronounced and snappy. The EVH cab adds in that softness and sizzle to the mix quite nicely.

On it's own it can blast but needs some boosting in the mid's and highs to make is stand out.

I Like the EVH 412 I have. Can't compare it to a Marshall cab, but I'd say the "softer" adjective being used above is a good general description. I find mine a touch on the darker side. I play it with a Whitebox 212 K100 loaded cab (The EVH 412 currently has 2 greenbacks in x pattern w/ 2 EVH speakers) and the EVH is more low/low mid dominant between the two while the 2x12 is much brighter in the mids/ treble. I feel construction is excellent.

this was relevant for me, thanks for posting. i also have one of those peavey cabs with k85s. i was thinking about getting an evh 412 to match my 5153 but maybe i'll just hold off. i like how my peavey sounds but ocd and all... lol.

I love my old Peavey k85 cabs. Just saying. But I agree that they do have less snap.

OP - Have you looked into Splawn cabs? They are built exceptionally well and sound great. IMO.

Thanks for the replies, dudes! So you guys say it's slightly warmer than a Marshall cab, then? That seems like something I'd dig.

I have not considered Splawn cabs because they are not easy to get ahold of locally. EVH cabs are MIM, so I'm sure I could find one here (I'm in Mexico) if I looked. Plus I like the look of a matching cab for my head, lol.

Warmer/softer is a good term, remember these are the Heritage Greenbacks not the Chinese regular Greenbacks. Definitely a really well built cab, mine is going no where!

Hey, I dig it too...I think it's a great cab that lets the speaker do most of the work vs a cab that adds its own character to the tone. Similar to the EVH in that way, IMO. When you factor in the cost? 200 bucks or less? No brainer.

I've seen a few for second hand sale at quite high prices so I haven't yet purchased one. The plywood is somewhat middle-range in thickness, EVH cabs are around 90lbs and closer to a marshall/mesa cab thickness I believe(around 1.25"). ENGL/Orange cabs have 1.5" thick fronts and weigh around 110lb which are terrible to lift. EVH cabs also have smaller dimensions than those two mentioned.

Exactly. Those cabs are incredibly beastly. Impossible to beat for the value IMO.

I have one with Creambacks and V30s in it. Sounds totally awesome. I would be careful about running a 100w head all wound up through a stock EVH 4x12. Those 25w speakers may be rated on the low side, but those heads are too. If you run them very hard for hours on end, you will blow those speakers.

Totally happy with my EVH cab, save for 1 small issue,,, the wheels on mine bump up against the underside of the cab and catch all the time. It’s like they are too big or something. Mine cab and head were bought brand new and I personally took them out of the shipping box. If you roll the cab in a front to back direction (where the cab is more prone to tip over), the wheels don’t rub against the bottom, but if you push the cab with the handle sides riding front and back(like your supposed to), the friggen wheels rub against the bottom. Maybe they figured this out and changed the wheels; my cab is like from 2012, but it sucks trying to move this thing around. 2 thumbs up on the cab other than that!

I swapped out the wheels on mine. The stock ones are on posts that end up wiggling the holders loose. I don't think they can be repaired when this happened. I just removed them all and used bigger wheels from Lowe's.

I can’t speak for the cabs , but the EVH branded greenbacks are absolutely my favorite current production speaker.
