EVH Delay?

Does anyone know what delay unit Eddie is using? Last night during practice, I unplugged my G-Major 2 from the loop, and notice that the amp came alive. So the GM2 is now out. I couldn't get over how much it was coloring my tone in a negative way. The main two effects that I like to use are delay and pitch shift. I am not really aware of a pedal that does a good pitch shift... so I guess I'm SOL on that effect. However, I do need a good delay. Something that doesn't suck tone, and perhaps has a ducking feature. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I also don't want to spend a small fortune on the unit. I asked about Ed's delay gear because he probably uses what sounds good with the amp.

Looks like he's still using the same SDE-3000's and PCM 70's he's had for years.... Funny on the G-Major 2 comment, I was looking at getting one until I scored a TC Flashback X4 yesterday.... More on that later in another thread. haha Later!

I would highly recommend the Hardwire Delay (DL-8). It sounds extremely close to the SDE-3000 delays that Ed uses. Just like on the SDE-3000, the DL-8 can have a chorusing effect on the delay repeats only, which adds a ton of width to the tone

Or you can keep your G-Major II and stick it in parallel, via a Suhr Minimix or similar. It depends a bit on how you use the GM, but if you keep the internal routing in parallel and go kill-dry it should work just fine. Just about any unit that doesn´t have analog mix can benefit tonally from this approach, and it´s a lot simpler than going wet-dry or wet-dry-wet.

The key is to keep your dry signal intact, TC Flashbacks do this. They have a dry thru which is why those pedals sound so good. Plus with the addition of the Tone Print editor, I don't see how there is any other option than the TC Flashback. Haven't tried the Hardwire, but it doesn't have a full blown editor.

Hi, just a side note on the G-Major 2. I know it is not the cleanest processor. But better then most. Set correctly it shoudn't rob your tone that much. It has a few different setttings for levels internally. (PRO, Consumer,etc) Setting this correctly along with your effects loop send and return is crucial to getting it to pass your tone correctly. Also using the G Major software editor helps you dial in the right amount of wet/dry for delay and time based effects as well as pitch. Balancing all of this well allows your amp tone to come through with the right amount of effects and dry.
I have had three G- Major 2s with different amps, Bogner 101b, CAA- PT-100 and I have always got a great tone with the G Major 2 in the loop in series.
Regarding Eddie's effects. I am sure he is doing a wet/dry/wet thing and not passing all of his tone through the Roland.

The g major 2 had terrible tone suck so bad I sold a brand new one at a loss when it first came out. Total fail with that unit.

Sounds killer both ways, i've used it infront of several stock Marshalls with good results. Personally i like my delays in the Loop,

I just got my Flashback X4 in yesterday and I am BLOWN AWAY by what that thing can do.... Got mine used from a friend. HIGHLY recommended!! If you're only really using the G Major for delays, I'd say ditch that and pick up an X4!

The versatility of that Flashback X4 is awesome! I wish Hardwire would make a similar type of pedal with the DL-8 circuitry in it. It would pretty much cover all my needs for delays.

Since Steve Lukather uses the DL-8, I am surprised he has not worked on a signature delay with Digitech like you suggest.

I found the same. I've since had a problem putting any piece of digital equipment in the serial loop of my beloved amplifier. I resided to stomp boxes & have never looked back or have any desire to change.

Sat down with the amp and the G-Major 2 last night and really dug into some programming. I think I have solved the issue. I've got it sounding much better. Pulled out a lot of things that I didn't need in the presets. Sounds much better now.

I picked up a Flashback and I am very happy with it. Does anyone know how the Hardwire compares to the Flashback?

I did that with my G Major instantly and the improvement was night and day. I really messed with the Lo/Hi Factors and that change a lot of the sound too.
