I have the same issue. When I step on it its like I took a blanket and threw it over my cab, or like I switched to the neck pickup or something :(

I barely use it because of this, but it sure looks cool on my board though

Is there a mod to make it not mud up your tone?

If you run a bunch of pedals you have to have a buffer up front.

Another thought: maybe the internal trimpot in some of you guys' pedals has gotten out of whack somehow ?

I have the Custom Shop script logo model with LED. It's a nice pedal, though I don't think it's TB.

I replaced my EVH phase 90 with a Whirlwind orange box, which is true bypass and is smoother than either mode of the EVH phase 90. I too struggled with the EVH phase 90...
+1...for the money, you can't beat the Whirlwind. Just as good as the reissue 74 but incorporates true bypass and power.

I just have a phaser, flanger, octaver and wah out front. Oh, and a tuner

Is that too many?

Try plugging straight into the amp and listen to how it sounds. Then plug thru your pedals. If you notice a difference a buffer should get your tone back.

I had the same problem and off it went.

Did you replace it? Im looking at the 74 script phase 90. but it has the same bypass as the EVH. Just wonder if it would be different. I see so many people using these two phase 90s I'm just baffled. It kills so much of your tone....
Nah. I didn't use a phase enough to try to replace it.

I have an original Phase 100 (from the mid to late 80's I think) and I never noticed any tone degrading from it. Maybe I got a good one.

I run 2....for different things. I'll go completely against the grain here...my main Phase for solo's is a cheapo stock 90. Cuts great, has a bit of extra grit...which I like. I use this 90 for solo's only.

My second Phase...for textures started with a Destination Phase, then the Maxon Phase Tone, then onto the Phase 100, next up the EVH, then to the Retro-Sonic, back to the EVH, then the MXR script, back to the Retro-Sonic, then the T-Rex Tremonti and now is the Whirlwind. I prefer the Whirlwind. I prefer simple Phase pedals.

The Whirlwind is a great sounding, simple pedal. So, solo's...stock 90. Textures...Whirlwind.

I used to have a plain, stock MXR phase 90. It sounded great until I took it a part to try and mantle it and couldn't figure out how to put it back together...lol. It never messed with my tone, but I wanted to be able to have the ability to mod it for like a mix knob or something...and have more dry signal if desired. My friend knew of a mod, but I did it wrong.

Another vote for the Whirlwind. It replaced an original script MXR on my pedal board. Great pedal.

Easy fix is to use a single bypass loop pedal. Cheaper than a new phaser.

Analogman sells the 74 resissue and mods it to true bypass. I dont think he can mod the EVH but I know he does the 74 reissue.

It's only bad if your signal is unbuffered. Stick a buffer before it and the difference becomes negligible.

You'll note that a lot of people who run Phase 90s have a TU-2 at the beginning of their FX chain.

I should have tried that before I got rid of mine. All pedals before the EVH phase 90 were TB and so I noticed a significant tone change. Oh well, I like the sound of the whirlwind orange box better anyway.

It's been a few years since I've tried the EVH phase 90, but I hated it when I tried it. I liked the Non-led Script Phase 90 I tried.

I currently use a Homebrew Psilocybe, which sounds great, but I'll probably be getting something smaller in the future.

I like the LED script phase 90 reissue. When i tested it out i didnt notice any tone loss, but now its in my main rig in a RJM Rack Gizmo loop.
