I have an import special and a USA Stealth. I have found that the US models in my experience have been much more consistent. When I purchased the special, I played several till I found one with the mojo that I was looking for...all in all great guitar for the money. YMMV
Not to derail your thread, but it's funny you start it. I ran across the USA Custom model yesterday & fell in love with the specs & features. I was going to start a thread asking about those . It's like an EVH take on the LP Custom with matching price tags. I didn't fall in love with the price either, but it's made in the Fender Custom Shop so maybe they can back up the price.

I played a friend's Wolfgang Special and was highly impressed with it for the price(no fanboi here either). The neck was smooth & comfortable. It sounded great. The only negative was the d-tuna was a bit of a nuisance because it rattled. It was only a few days old too, but I have no idea if that was from the factory or from his doing. That's the only one I've played so I can't comment on the model's overall consistency, but my experience was definitely positive.
The first couple of specials I played I hated. I played one at GC a few weeks ago and it played and sounded really good but I agree you need to play before you buy to find the right one.
