which would you choose and why ? the evh wolfgang standard or the peavey wolfgang standard. i was looking at getting another peavey wolfgang, but have noticed the evh wolfgangs have been coming down in price on ebay, so now i am considering one of those. only thing is i dont have any local shops that keep them so i cant try the evh out.

It depends I suppose. The Peavey Wolfgang Standards go for about $800-$1600 used... the EVHs about $3100 new (so about $2400 or so used.) I had a patent pending Standard Deluxe for a few months in the spring... top notch guitar that I just couldn't bond with. For the price difference alone... I'd say get the Peavey or perhaps the new EVH Wolfgang Special... $1300 new and made in Japan. The USA EVH is one of the best guitars I've played, but I would never pay $3000+ for one... If you feel confident shelling out the extra coin for the USA EVH, definitely do it as they're awesome. However, if price is an issue, I would certainly consider the EVH Special or Peavey Wolfgang Standard (solid colours except goldtop) or Standard Deluxe (flamed top and goldtop finishes.)

the price really isnt an issue. i own two patent pending wolfgang standards right now. one is painted a custom gloss white (still waiting for a few things before being reassembled), and the other is black. i was considering either a nice flametop peavey wolfie, or getting one of the quilt top evh's, but i am undecided ...

Id actually get an ernie ball axis, they are good guitars! the Fender EVH is overpriced as hell!

I agree and the quality sux. For that money there's WAY better guitars out there.

A used Wolfgang or a used Axis would be what I would get. I'm on the hunt for another Wolfgang Special....love mine!

Fender is asking too much for the EVH.

 yessss I'd say save the money and save some more and get the one Paul has in his avatar! kick ass!

For that money I'd buy a Gibson Historic, Suhr Modern or Anderson Drop Top... waaaaaaaay better than the Fender EVH. Although if you are a VH nut...

Ive had the Peaveys & Axis and liked them fine but now I have an EVH Special and I just love it. Plays incredible and just feels great in my hands. I put a 42mm brass block on it and it really made a difference in the tone and sustain. I paid $800 used for it I think, might have been $850 but a great guitar!

No shit! And for the same money as a EVH.  They're not even in the same class.

Whats the wait time on a suhr or anderson typically ? I am a vh nut but i also like nice guitars and have thought about those brands before

For Suhr, it's been 6-7 months lately.

never played a fender EVH wolfie - but i do agree the quilts do suck for the money that they cost, seems you would be better off with a peavey for sure. i owned a wolfie for about 4 years before selling mine.

FWIW i have also played an anderson - no contest the anderson blew my wolfgang out of the water in terms of quality and tone. YMMV.

I ordered a Modern at the end of January and was told six to seven months before it would get here. I can't speak for Andersons... though I'd imagine the wait time would be a few months at least.

FWIW: I can't believe I forgot about the EBMM Axis... those are wickedly cool guitars that definitely preach high quality and good playability all around. They're a contender in that price range too... you can pick them up for $800-$1200 used. Even if you buy a new one, it's still less than $2,000 I believe...

I agree that a Suhr, Anderson or Ernie Ball Axis would be a much better instrument for the money. I really liked my Anderson Drop Top Classic when i had it (sold it because i needed the money). I just picked up an Axis about a month ago and I really enjoy it. Ever since i played a Peavey Wolfgang (years ago) i wanted to get that style guitar. As stated before, For the price of the Fender there are some much better option available. If im spending $2-$3k on a guitar it better have an amazing looking top on it.

Price/quality aside.

The suggestions given are very, very different guitars to me. The Axis neck and tone are great, but not for everyone, the Peavey Wolf and EVH Wolf have very different necks and frets, some love one, some love the other. The tone of the Peavey and EVH Wolf are also quite different.

Don't forget about the post-EVH era Peaveys. I've got an HP Special CT and it's fantastic. Cosmetically the quilt is nice, but neck is loaded with birdseyes. The thing plays like a dream and they can be had relatively cheaply.

I agree 100%. The Peavey HP Carve Top Specials are fantastic guitars! They're way better then the Wolfgang Peavey's IMO. Here's mine and it's the best sounding/playing guitar I have!
