Facebook gear pages....future of Rigtalk?

I was on facebook but the bastards took my profile down because I was not using my actual name? I can't figure out how to get the account back so I havent been on since :dunno:

grilling recipes, cool dog/cat videos, gear porn/sales/stuff, and the inspirational journey quotes from fat-divorcee = FB for me!

i'd follow you guys or stay... i personally like the forum mo-better.

Interesting topic.

In general forums are dead compared to what they used to be. If it all went to FB as you can see above there will be people who just won't bother with it.

For myself, I used to frequent another forum as well. Ever since I joined their private FB group I rarely log onto the actual forum anymore. It is a small private group though, I think for Rig Talk, it is just a forum type of thing for me. Can't say I would sign up on FB.

FB is just easier and more convenient. These days I only get on forums at work as cell phone usage is frowned upon.

I joined FB way late in the game. I basically didn't want anything to do with social media either. I ended up joining after running into some friends and they were like "dude there are some pics of you and bro from your old band on a fb group, you should check it out". I wanted to see the pics but didn't want to join FB. But at that time my brother passed 23 years ago and I honestly didn't have much pics of that era so fuck it. I joined, friended mainly old school band friends from like 20 year ago and a few close friends. No work peeps, no family and joined a few other interesting groups. It's definitely handy for band related stuff.

So FB is what it is. I only FB from work. If RT is crickets I check FB lol. I'm down with an RT FB group but seems like it would be pretty dead with all you anti social media bastards

With that said what are some good FB groups for guitar n stuff?

i'll show my lack of understanding of FB here... but i joined the Boss Katana group (among others). But this group is very strong and really supportive (though there are some D-bags). anyways,,,almost 9k members,...super-active (i'd say).

But, and this is where my ignorance will shine i suppose,...it is cluttered as fuck trying to keep up with anything. it gets buried in all the other shit that goes on in the group. there is a search option but, as lazy as this is, searching every time i want to read someones thoughts on something i have to search. The formatting and organization of threads is just better (to me, for me). i'm kind-of an organization freak...i like folders, and files and everything has a spot. the forums are organized for the most part, FB (unless i'm wrong) would be ALL the sub-groups in RT in one location; classifieds, OT, Gear talk, etc...

ETA: one of the many things i like about RT is the rules are very relaxed and the peeps here have thick-skin (mostly), which is how it should be. if the group is private, does FB have control/say over what someone types? don't know...just asking.

I agree about the organizational benefits of forums vs facebook. A forum I used to use for work (computer graphics/editing) moved to FB and it's difficult to find information on topics...the search options aren't as robust and a lot of useful information seems to get lost.
Go figure but social media seems more useful for just being social, lol.

Near as I can tell Facebook is only monitored if reported. In a closed group a snitch is required.
The rules are changing in social media everywhere. I would expect changes in how things are done.

FB is sewer filled with trash. If I want to deal with that sort of garbage, I'd be there. People posting pics of their latte art, and all of the other stuff everyone mentioned above.

If I want to talk gear, I come here or a few other spots. There is always the next new thing, but no one "new" format has held up so great over time. If this place dies, someone will start up another.

;)

Again, you only see that stuff from people you ask or give permission to befriend. If you just just join gear or guitar related groups that is all you will see.

The fear of the unknown. It’s apparent that many do not understand how to use FB and social media to their benefit.

It’s very easy to save threads. There is a flag tab.

The rules to a closed FB group could be just as relaxed and the peeps would be the same as here. One thing I’d want to do is cross reference everyone to make sure that they have an RT forum handle before they become part of the group.

I agree with FB search sucking... good point.

I pretty much only use the internet for music. Facebook algorithms are based on keeping your attention. The majoring of what I see on Facebook is music related because that is how I use it.

More than half and probably closer to 90% of talking about gear I do on Facebook.

Rig Talk, The Gear Page and the other dozen forums I look at occasionally in no way could complete. These forums are fine if you don't mind the limitations.

If the group starts to take off I will check it out. Reality is I already belong to about 60 groups music related on Facebook and only look at 5 of them. I delete most of them every few months.

I'm on my third Facebook account and have been on there pretty much since the beginning. I have been on computers daily since 1982. Internet since it started.
Forums are dead...I don't see them being around much in a few years.

Again, I’m not suggesting it take the place of the actual forum, just supplement it.

ALL of this is truth. However, the only way for it to take off is for RT members such as yourself to contribute.

Sorry to hear about your bother.

I belong more to groups that pertain to specific gear and brands such as:
Bogner amps
Bogner Shiva players group (I’m the Admin)
Soldano Amplification Players Group (I’m Admin)
EVH 5153
Gear Talk
Huge Guitar Racks
Marshall Amplifires
Fender Groups
Etc

I requested to join.... Be aware there is 6 other groups on Facebook called "Rig Talk".
I used the link on this thread to find the right group.

Hmmm. I only see 2 and we are the only “group”. The other page is a business type page that you can only like. It has 921 “likes”.

No interest in Social Media. Especially no interest in supporting a site that full well knew what Russia was doing with it and did nothing. If I was young and playing in bands I’m sure I would feel differently about using social media. Hell, the last social media website I used for any length of time was Myspace when I was playing in bands LOL. I’m old now and actually prefer playing more than living in a virtual world of talking about playing. I find all the talk about big brother and evil government monitoring hilarious as every citizen is giving it all away for free on their own, in search of notoriety, acceptance from strangers and attempting a feeling of self worth from exaggerating or even outright faking their own persona. I was watching that Bruce Willis movie, Surrogates the other day and can totally imagine us there one day.
Rig-talk is a shadow of its former self but a brief visit to here or the Gear Page is all I need for a little guitar community fix. I know what I like and how to find it, so rarely get new ideas from forums anyway. I stumble across better sources randomly on YT.

Damn. For some reason these don’t show up when I search using the FB app on my phone. I guess the good thing is none of them seem to be primarily guitar related and none use the RT logo.
